# Are Trades Safe From AI? The Jobs AI Can't Replace (Yet)

Skilled trades are among the jobs least exposed to AI. The work is physical, varies job to job and needs licensed judgment on site, which current AI and robots handle poorly. BLS projects HVAC, electrician and plumber jobs to grow faster than average from 2025 to 2035, while office roles like customer service shrink.

## Key takeaways

- BLS projects HVAC technician jobs to grow 10.9%, electricians 9.2% and plumbers 6.8% from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5% for all occupations.
- A 2025 Microsoft Research study of real AI use put roofers, cement masons and other hands-on trades among the 40 occupations where generative AI applies least.
- The exposed part of the trades is the office: phones, scheduling, estimating paperwork and bookkeeping.
- AI changes how techs work (diagnostic apps, photo estimates, call summaries) more than whether they're needed.
- The safest position combines a license, hands-on skill and customer-facing skills like explaining options and selling.

## What does the job data say about trades and AI?

Government projections show the core trades growing while AI-exposed office jobs shrink. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects HVAC, electrician and plumber employment to grow two to three times faster than the 3.5% average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035, with tens of thousands of openings a year in each trade.

Two caveats. First, projections aren't predictions about AI specifically; they fold in housing, energy rules, retirements and the economy. Second, growth in jobs doesn't mean the work stays the same. A 2035 HVAC tech will likely use more software than a 2025 one. But the data gives no sign that AI is shrinking demand for people who install and repair things.

## Why is trade work hard for AI to replace?

Trade work happens in unpredictable physical spaces, every job is a little different, and mistakes carry safety and legal consequences. AI models are good at text, images and patterns on a screen. Robots are good at repeating the same motion in a controlled factory. A crawl space with a 1970s duct system is neither.

- **Unstructured spaces.** Attics, crawl spaces, roofs and finished basements differ in every house. Robots struggle outside controlled environments.
- **Diagnosis by senses.** Techs use sound, smell, heat and feel along with meters and experience. An app can suggest; it can't put hands on the equipment.
- **Licensing and liability.** Electrical, plumbing, gas and refrigerant work requires licensed or certified people who are accountable for code compliance and safety.
- **Customer trust.** Homeowners want a person to explain a $12,000 replacement. In an ACHR News survey of 782 homeowners fielded in spring 2026, the loss of human judgment and expertise was the top concern about AI in HVAC, named by 36%.

Research on how people actually use AI points the same way. A Microsoft Research study (Tomlinson et al., revised October 2025) analyzed more than 200,000 anonymized conversations with its Copilot assistant and scored occupations by how much generative AI applies to their work. Roofers, roofer helpers, cement masons and concrete finishers, floor sanders and painter helpers were among the 40 lowest-scoring occupations. Customer service representatives and telephone operators were among the highest.

## Which parts of a trades business are exposed to AI?

The office is where AI is moving fastest: answering phones, booking jobs, following up estimates, writing quotes, bookkeeping and dispatch. These are text-and-schedule tasks, exactly what language models and automation are good at. That's why office roles show flat or shrinking projections while field roles grow.

**AI exposure inside a typical trades business**

| Role or task | Exposure | What's changing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Answering calls and booking | High | AI receptionists answer, qualify and book; people take escalations |
| Dispatch and routing | Medium to high | Software suggests or assigns techs and routes; see [will AI replace dispatchers](https://www.brix.so/ai/will-ai-replace/dispatchers) |
| Estimate follow-up | High | Automated text and email sequences |
| Bookkeeping data entry | High | Bank feeds, auto-categorization and invoice sync; a human still reviews |
| Estimating | Medium | Photo and aerial measurement tools draft takeoffs; site visits still matter on complex jobs |
| Sales and comfort advising | Low to medium | AI drafts proposals; people close |
| Installation and repair | Low | Diagnostic apps and AI assistants help; the work stays hands-on |

That pattern matches what contractors report. In the same ACHR News survey, half of 205 HVAC contractors said they didn't use AI yet. Among uses reported, follow-up messages (30%), scheduling and customer service (23%) and estimates (20%) led; diagnosing issues before a visit was least common (11%).

## How will AI change the work of a technician?

For most techs, AI shows up as better tools rather than a replacement: apps that look up model numbers and error codes, AI that summarizes the customer's call before you arrive, photo-based measurement, and help writing up findings in plain language for the customer. The tech who uses these well finishes jobs faster and sells better.

- **Before the job:** a call summary and customer history on your phone, so you don't walk in cold.
- **On the job:** quick lookups of manuals, wiring diagrams and fault codes. Always verify against the manufacturer's documentation.
- **After the job:** voice-to-text notes, clean invoices and follow-up messages without typing on a tailgate.

## How can tradespeople future-proof their careers?

1. **Get licensed and certified.** Licenses and certifications like EPA 608 are legal requirements AI can't hold. They're also what customers and employers check first.
2. **Go deep on diagnostics.** Troubleshooting complex systems (variable-speed equipment, heat pumps, smart panels) is the hardest part to automate and the best paid.
3. **Learn to explain and sell.** Walking a homeowner through options builds the trust AI can't. Techs who sell maintenance plans and replacements earn more.
4. **Use the software, don't fear it.** Techs comfortable with field apps, diagnostic tools and AI assistants get more done per day.
5. **Think about ownership.** Owners capture the upside of AI by putting it on the office work. See [how to start a trades business](https://www.brix.so/start/hvac) if that's your path.

## If you own the shop, what does AI take off your plate?

For owners, the useful question isn't whether AI replaces your techs; it won't. It's which office tasks you can stop doing at 9 p.m. Missed calls, estimate follow-up, review requests, invoices and bookkeeping are the usual first wins. Our [automation recipes for contractors](https://www.brix.so/ai/automation-recipes) list 20 of them, and [how to use AI in a trades business](https://www.brix.so/guides/ai-for-trades-businesses) covers rollout.

BRIX handles the office side so your crews stay on the tools: its AI receptionist answers every call and books the job, sales automation follows up every lead and estimate, and invoicing, bookkeeping help and QuickBooks sync keep the money side current.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are trades safe from AI?

The hands-on trades are among the safest jobs. BLS projects HVAC, electrician and plumber jobs to grow 6.8% to 10.9% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the 3.5% average, and research on real AI use ranks hands-on trades among the least exposed occupations. The office side of trades businesses is far more exposed.

### What jobs can't AI replace?

Jobs that combine physical work in unpredictable places, licensed accountability and face-to-face trust are hardest to replace: electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, roofers and similar trades, along with hands-on care roles. A 2025 Microsoft Research study listed roofers and cement masons among the occupations where generative AI applies least.

### Will AI replace electricians?

Not in any foreseeable timeframe. BLS projects electrician jobs to grow 9.2% from 2025 to 2035 with about 72,700 openings a year. AI may help with load calculations, code lookups and paperwork, but licensed electricians remain legally responsible for the work.

### Will AI replace plumbers?

No. BLS projects plumber, pipefitter and steamfitter jobs to grow 6.8% from 2025 to 2035, with about 42,000 openings a year. Plumbing is physical, varies by building and requires licensing in most places, all of which keeps people at the center.

### Will AI replace HVAC technicians?

No. HVAC is one of the fastest-growing trades in BLS projections, at 10.9% from 2025 to 2035 with about 40,600 openings a year. AI tools help with diagnostics and paperwork, but installing and repairing equipment, and handling refrigerant under EPA rules, stays hands-on.

### Which jobs in a trades business are most at risk from AI?

Office roles built on repetitive phone, scheduling and data work: call answering, booking, dispatch, estimate follow-up and bookkeeping entry. BLS projects customer service representative jobs to fall 5.3% and bookkeeping clerk jobs 5.6% from 2025 to 2035. People in those roles who handle escalations and sales stay valuable.

### Should I go into a trade because of AI?

AI is one good reason among several. Trades offer paid apprenticeships, licensing that protects your role, median pay above the all-occupation median for HVAC, electrical and plumbing, and strong projected demand. Choose a trade you'd enjoy doing every day; that matters more than any forecast.
