# Free Contractor Business Name Generator

A good trade business name is easy to say on the phone, tells people what you do, and is legally yours to use. Start with four styles (place-based, owner name, descriptive and short brandable), then check every favorite against your state's business registry, the USPTO trademark database, your licensing board's rules and the domain you want.

## Key takeaways

- Saying what you do ("Plumbing," "Lawn Care") in the name helps customers and costs you nothing.
- Do the phone test: if you'd have to spell it for every caller, keep looking.
- A state registration or DBA doesn't give you trademark rights. Search the USPTO database too.
- Licensed trades have naming and advertising rules. Check your board before you print the truck.

Each run gives you 32 names, 8 in each style, built from a word bank for your trade. With the default lawn care inputs, the descriptive list starts with "Honest Lawn Care", "Sharp Blade Mowing", "Lush Lawn Care". Add your town, your last name and a word you like and they move to the top: for a roofer in Cedar Falls named Lopez who likes "Summit," the first ideas are "Cedar Falls Roofing," "Lopez's Roofing" and "Summit Roofing." Hit "More name lists" for a new set.

## What makes a good name for a trades business?

A good trades business name is short enough to say in one breath, spells the way it sounds, and either says what you do or is easy to pair with it. Homeowners find you by searching for the service, reading your truck or hearing your name from a neighbor. Clever names that need explaining lose at all three.

**The four naming styles the generator uses**

| Style | Example | Good for | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Local and place-based | Cedar Falls Roofing | Owners who'll stay in one area; signals you're nearby | Outgrowing the name if you expand to the next county |
| Owner name | Lopez's Roofing | Trust and word of mouth; feels accountable | Harder to sell the business later; common surnames are crowded |
| Descriptive | Honest Lawn Care | Search and trucks: says the service outright | Generic names are hard to trademark |
| Short and punchy | Mowtown | Memorable brands, social handles, logos | May need a tagline so people know what you do |

## How do you check if a business name is available?

Check four places before you commit: your state's business entity database, the USPTO trademark database, your trade licensing board, and the domain and social handles you want. Each is a separate system. The SBA puts it plainly: entity names protect you at the state level, trademarks protect you at the federal level, and each registration is legally independent.

1. **Search your state's business registry** Every state has a business entity search, usually on the Secretary of State's website. An LLC or corporation name has to be distinguishable from ones already registered there.
2. **Register a DBA if you need one** If you'll trade under a name that isn't your legal or LLC name, most states and some counties require a DBA (assumed or fictitious name). The SBA notes a DBA doesn't give legal protection by itself, and several businesses can share one DBA in a state.
3. **Search federal trademarks** Search the USPTO's trademark search system for the name and close variations used for similar services. The USPTO says a state business name registration doesn't grant trademark rights.
4. **Check your licensing board** In licensed trades, the name you advertise often has to match your license and include your license number. See the trade presets below.
5. **Grab the domain and handles** Check the .com and the social handles you'll actually use. The SBA notes your domain doesn't have to match your legal name, so a town or trade word added to a taken name is fine.

> This is general information, not legal advice. A trademark attorney can run a full clearance search before you invest in signs, wraps and a website.

## Naming rules in licensed trades

Plumbing, electrical, HVAC and roofing are licensed in many states, and boards regulate how licensed businesses advertise. Two examples: California's contractor law says a licensee can't conduct business under more than one name per license and bars names that suggest classifications you don't hold, and CSLB says license numbers must appear in all advertising. Texas requires electrical and air conditioning contractors to include their license numbers in advertising. Pest control is licensed by agriculture or pest boards rather than contractor boards in many states. Each trade preset lists the rules we verified for that trade.

## Business name generators by trade

Each preset loads that trade's word bank and adds naming advice for the trade: the words customers search for, licensing rules on what you can call yourself, and names to avoid.

## Business name mistakes to avoid

1. **Copying the market leader.** A name one letter off a big local brand invites confusion and a cease-and-desist letter.
2. **Initials only.** "JRK Services" says nothing and is forgettable. Add the trade.
3. **Hard spellings.** Swapping letters (Kleen, Phlo) means customers can't find your website by typing what they heard.
4. **Boxing yourself in.** "Smith Gutter Cleaning" is a hard name for a company that later does roofs. Pick a suffix that fits where you're headed.
5. **Claims you can't back up.** "Licensed," "Certified" or "Eco" in a name has to be true, and some of those words are regulated.
6. **Skipping the phone test.** Say "Thanks for calling ___, this is ___" ten times. You'll say it thousands more.

## After you pick a name

Register the entity or DBA, get your EIN, set up a business phone number and claim your [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile) under the exact name you registered. Then read the start-up guide for your trade, such as [how to start a cleaning business](https://www.brix.so/start/cleaning) or [how to start a lawn care business](https://www.brix.so/start/lawn-care), and set up your [first missed call text](https://www.brix.so/generators/missed-call-text) before the phone starts ringing.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I come up with a name for my contracting business?

Try four styles: your town or area plus your trade, your last name plus your trade, a descriptive phrase about the work, and a short brandable word. Shortlist five, say each out loud as if answering the phone, then check your state registry, the USPTO trademark database and the domain.

### Should my business name include my trade?

Usually yes. A name like "Cedar Falls Plumbing" tells searchers, neighbors and anyone reading your truck what you do. If you choose a brandable name, pair it with the trade in your logo and Google Business Profile category.

### How do I check if a business name is taken?

Search your state's business entity database, usually on the Secretary of State's website, and the USPTO trademark search system for the same or similar names in your services. Also search Google Maps in your area and check the domain and social handles.

### Does registering my business name protect it?

Only partly. A state LLC or corporation name stops someone registering the same entity name in that state, and a DBA gives little protection by itself. Federal protection comes from a trademark registration with the USPTO.

### Do I need a DBA for my trade business?

You need one in most states if you trade under a name that isn't your legal name or your LLC's registered name, for example a sole proprietor named Ana Lopez operating as "Summit Roofing." Check your state or county's assumed-name rules.

### Does this business name generator use AI?

No. It combines hand-built word banks for each trade with your town, last name and keyword, right in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, and the same inputs always give the same names.
