# Free EPA 608 Universal Practice Test

EPA 608 Universal certification means you've passed Core plus Types I, II and III, which covers every kind of stationary refrigeration and AC equipment. Under EPA's rules the Universal test is 100 questions, 25 from each section, closed-book and proctored, with a 70% passing score. You can take it in one sitting or combine separately passed type tests.

## Key takeaways

- Universal = Core + Type I + Type II + Type III. It's 100 questions.
- You can take it all at once or combine passing scores on separate Type I, II and III tests.
- A mail-in Type I or an open-book Core test can't be used toward Universal.
- Our exam mode draws 25 questions from each section, out of 125 original questions, and scores each section separately.

> **Independent practice questions**
>
> BRIX wrote these Universal questions from EPA's public Section 608 pages and the federal regulation. They are not real exam questions. BRIX is not affiliated with EPA, ESCO, Mainstream or any other certifying organization, and passing this practice test doesn't certify you. Only an EPA-approved certifying organization can.

## How does the Universal test work?

Appendix D of the regulation spells it out: "Tests for Universal technicians will include 100 questions (25 from Group 1 and 25 from each relevant technical Group)," and Universal tests "may be taken all at once, or by combining passing scores on separate Type I, Type II, and Type III tests" ([40 CFR 82, Subpart F, Appendix D](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-C/part-82/subpart-F)). The whole thing must be closed-book and proctored in a secure environment. That's why a mail-in Type I result can't count, and why EPA says an open-book Core test can't be used for Universal either ([EPA](https://www.epa.gov/section608/section-608-technician-certification-requirements)).

The regulation sets 70 percent as the passing score for the Universal test. How a certifying organization reports a one-sitting Universal attempt when you pass some sections and miss others is up to its own procedures, so ask before you book. Our results page shows your score for each section so you can see where you'd stand either way.

**What a Universal attempt looks like**

| Section | Questions on the real test | In this practice bank | What it covers |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Core | 25 | 36 | Ozone, Clean Air Act, three Rs, recovery equipment, safety, shipping |
| Type I | 25 | 28 | Small appliances: 80/90% recovery, passive recovery, disposal |
| Type II | 25 | 33 | High- and medium-pressure: evacuation table, leak repair, leak detection |
| Type III | 25 | 28 | Low-pressure chillers: purge units, 25 mm Hg, recharging |
| Total | 100 | 125 | Pass at 70% (closed-book, proctored) |

## Who should go straight for Universal?

Universal is the only certification that lets you work on everything from a dorm fridge to a 1,000-ton chiller. It makes sense if:

- You're in an HVAC program and don't yet know whether you'll end up residential, commercial or refrigeration.
- Your employer services a mix of equipment, such as rooftop units, walk-ins and the occasional chiller.
- You plan to start your own shop and don't want to turn down a job because your card says Type II.
- You'd rather study once and sit once than book a second test later.

If you're certain you'll only ever work on one class of equipment, a single type plus Core is a smaller lift. The [EPA 608 certification guide](https://www.brix.so/certifications/epa-608) compares the options.

## How Universal practice is different from the single sections

The single-section pages let you go deep on one topic list. Universal practice tests stamina and switching. In 100 questions you'll jump from ozone chemistry to a refrigerator with a dead compressor to a chiller's purge unit, and similar-sounding numbers start to blur: 0, 4, 10 and 15 inches of vacuum for Type II; 25 mm Hg absolute for Type III; 4 inches for small appliances. The questions most people miss on Universal practice are the ones where a number from one section is the wrong answer to another.

> **A classic cross-section mix-up**
>
> **Q: Which evacuation level applies to small appliances, as an alternative to the 80% / 90% recovery rule?**
>
> A. 0 psig · B. 4 inches of mercury vacuum · C. 10 inches of mercury vacuum · D. 25 mm Hg absolute
>
> **Answer: B.** 10 inches is a Type II number (high-pressure, 200 lb or more, newer equipment). 25 mm Hg absolute is the Type III number. 0 psig is the non-major-repair limit.

## A study plan for Universal

1. **Take one full 100-question round cold** Use exam mode. Don't look anything up. Your results page splits the score into Core, Type I, Type II and Type III topics.
2. **Fix the weakest section first** Go to that section's own page and use study mode, reading every explanation. Most people find Type II's tables and Type III's chiller procedures take the longest.
3. **Build one sheet of numbers** Write every number from all four sections on one page, grouped by section: dates, percentages, pressures, pounds and days. Re-draw it from memory every day.
4. **Run full rounds again** Each round draws a fresh random 25 from each section. Aim to clear 70% in every section, not just overall, three rounds in a row.
5. **Book a proctored test** Pick a program from EPA's list of [certifying programs](https://www.epa.gov/section608/certification-programs-section-608-technicians), which shows who offers on-site and remote testing.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many questions are on the EPA 608 Universal exam?

The Universal test is 100 questions: 25 from Core and 25 each from Type I, Type II and Type III, under Appendix D of 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. It can be taken in one sitting or built by combining separate passing tests.

### What score do you need to pass EPA 608 Universal?

The regulation sets a 70 percent passing score for the closed-book Universal test. Ask your certifying organization how it scores and reports each section when you take all four in one sitting.

### Can I get Universal by passing the types separately?

Yes. EPA's regulation says Universal can be earned by combining passing scores on separate Type I, Type II and Type III tests, as long as they're closed-book and proctored. A mail-in Type I test and an open-book Core test don't count toward Universal.

### Is Universal harder than Type II?

It covers more, not harder material. You need everything in Type II plus small appliances and low-pressure chillers, and you have to keep the similar-looking numbers from each section straight across 100 questions.

### Does a Universal card ever expire?

No. EPA states that Section 608 technician certification credentials do not expire. If you lose the card, contact the certifying organization that tested you; EPA doesn't issue or replace cards.
