# How to Start a Handyman Business in 2026 (Costs, License Limits and First Customers)

To start a handyman business, register it, insure it, and learn your state's limit for unlicensed work before you quote anything. California's limit is $1,000 per job with no permit and no helpers; Florida's is under $2,500. A solo start with a truck you own runs about $6,869 in our example.

## Key takeaways

- Startup cash is about $6,869 with a basic tool kit and your own truck, or about $30,369 with a full kit and a used van (illustrative, calculator below).
- California raised its minor-work limit from $500 to $1,000 on Jan. 1, 2025, but a permit or a single hired helper means you need a license at any price.
- Florida exempts casual, minor handyman jobs under $2,500; Arizona's limit is under $1,000 and your ads must say "not a licensed contractor." Washington makes every construction contractor register.
- Insureon's handyman customers pay about $81 a month for general liability and $42 a month for tools and equipment coverage.
- Housecall Pro's customer data puts TV mounting at $120–$250 and a ceiling fan install at $150–$300.

## How much does it cost to start a handyman business?

Less than most trades, because you already own many of the tools. The real costs are a truck or van that holds a ladder, insurance, and enough cash to get through the first slow months. With a basic cordless kit, a truck you own, registration, launch marketing and three months of fixed costs, our example comes to **$6,869**. Buy a full kit and a used van and it's about **$30,369**. Insurance (Insureon) and the job price (Housecall Pro) are cited; everything else is an illustrative starting point you should replace with your own quotes.

**Handyman startup costs, line by line**

| Line item | Example amount | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tools and starter supplies | $2,500 basic / $8,000 full kit | Illustrative. Count the tools you already own before you buy |
| Truck or van | $0 own / $18,000 used | Illustrative. Needs to carry an extension ladder and lock tools away |
| Registration and license fees | $400 | Illustrative. Washington's contractor registration alone is $150.20 |
| Launch marketing | $600 | Illustrative. Truck lettering, cards, a one-page site |
| General liability | $81/mo ($978/yr) | [Insureon](https://insureon.com/construction-contracting-business-insurance/handyman-services/cost), handymen |
| Tools and equipment (inland marine) | $42/mo ($505/yr) | [Insureon](https://insureon.com/construction-contracting-business-insurance/handyman-services/cost), handymen |
| Software and phone | $100/mo | Illustrative |
| Fuel, maintenance, payment | $450/mo | Illustrative |
| Consumables (fasteners, caulk, blades, patch) | $200/mo | Illustrative. Bill job materials to the customer |
| Ongoing marketing | $250/mo | Illustrative |

_Example totals: $3,500 one-time plus $1,123 a month. Three months of fixed costs in reserve adds $3,369, for $6,869 in startup cash. Insurance figures checked 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a solo handyman with his own pickup**
>
> He spends $2,500 filling gaps in his tool kit, $400 on registration and local fees, and $600 on lettering and cards: **$3,500** up front.
>
> Each month he pays $123 for liability and tool coverage, $100 for phone and software, $450 for the truck, $200 in consumables and $250 in ads: **$1,123 a month**.
>
> Holding three months of that ($3,369) brings his starting cash to **$6,869**. At $225 for a typical small install, about 5 jobs a month cover the fixed costs before he pays himself.

## Do you need a license to be a handyman?

It depends on the state, the size of the job, and whether it needs a permit. Most states that license contractors let unlicensed handymen take small jobs under a dollar limit. That limit is the most important number in your business, because it decides which calls you can say yes to. Three rules show up again and again: the limit counts labor **and** materials, a job that needs a permit isn't "minor" at any price, and you can't split one project into several small invoices to stay under it.

**Handyman limits in four states, from the official source**

| State | Rule for unlicensed work | Conditions | Official source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| California | Under $1,000 per project (raised from $500 on Jan. 1, 2025) | No building permit of any kind; you can't employ anyone on the job; ads must say you're not licensed | [CSLB bulletin #24-07](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/IndustryBulletins/2024/AB%202622%20Implementation.FINAL.pdf) |
| Florida | Total construction cost below $2,500 | Must be casual, minor or inconsequential; permit work usually doesn't qualify; check local licensing | [DBPR CILB FAQ](https://www2.myfloridalicense.com/construction-industry/faqs/) |
| Arizona | Under $1,000 on one project, labor and materials included | Casual or minor work only; not if a local building permit is required; ads must include "not a licensed contractor" | [A.R.S. § 32-1121(A)(14)](https://www.azleg.gov/ars/32/01121.htm) |
| Washington | No dollar exemption: construction contractors must register with L&I | Bond of $30,000 (general) or $15,000 (specialty) since July 1, 2024; $150.20 application fee; liability insurance required | [WA L&I](https://www.lni.wa.gov/licensing-permits/contractors/register-as-a-contractor/) |

_Last verified against each official page on 2026-10-24. Other states range from no state license at all to strict local rules. Cities and counties can add their own license, so call your local building department before your first paid job._

### California's $1,000 rule, read closely

The [CSLB bulletin](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/IndustryBulletins/2024/AB%202622%20Implementation.FINAL.pdf) that announced the change (AB 2622) is short, and the catch is in the second sentence: the work can't require a permit, and you can't employ anyone for the project. If either is true, you need a license even for a $300 job. If you bid more than $1,000, do permit work, or hire a helper without a license, you're open to legal action. The CSLB's [license application page](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/contractors/applicants/contractors_license/exam_application/before_applying_for_license.aspx) adds that a larger project can't be broken into pieces under $1,000. Unlicensed handymen in California can advertise jobs up to $1,000, as long as the ad says they're not licensed.

### When to get a contractor license

Get one when the jobs you're turning down are worth more than the time it takes. In California that means four full years of journey-level experience (or as a foreman, supervisor or contractor) within the last ten years, passing the exams, and a $25,000 bond before the license issues, per the [CSLB](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/contractors/applicants/contractors_license/exam_application/before_applying_for_license.aspx). Many handymen get a general building (B) license once they're regularly asked for small remodels. Electrical, gas and plumbing work is usually licensed separately and stays off your list unless you hold that trade license. See [what a contractor license is](https://www.brix.so/learn/contractor-license) and the [licensing hub](https://www.brix.so/licensing) for your state.

> **Not legal advice**
>
> Dollar limits, permit rules and advertising rules change, and cities add their own. Read your state board's page and ask your local building department before you advertise or take a job near the limit.

## What insurance does a handyman need?

Start with [general liability](https://www.brix.so/learn/general-liability-insurance) and tools-and-equipment coverage. General liability pays if you crack a countertop or a customer trips over your cord. Tools coverage pays when someone empties the truck overnight, which is the claim handymen talk about most. Homeowners and property managers will ask for a [certificate of insurance](https://www.brix.so/learn/certificate-of-insurance) before you start.

**What handyman businesses pay for insurance**

| Coverage | Per month | Per year | When you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $81 | $978 | Before the first paid job |
| Tools and equipment (inland marine) | $42 | $505 | As soon as your tools ride in the truck |
| Business owner's policy | $105 | $1,266 | If you also have a shop or storage unit to insure |
| Professional liability | $67 | $808 | If you give design advice or written assessments |
| Workers' compensation | $108 | $1,295 | When you hire; required in most states |
| Commercial auto | $188 | $2,252 | A vehicle titled to the business |
| Surety bond | $9 | $112 | Where a state or city license requires one |

Business structure works the same as any small trade. The [SBA](https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business/choose-business-structure) notes that a sole proprietor is personally liable for business debts, while an LLC limits that in most cases. The [IRS](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/get-an-employer-identification-number) gives out an EIN free. If you haven't picked a name yet, try the [handyman business name generator](https://www.brix.so/generators/business-name/handyman). Some states charge sales tax on repair labor or on the materials you resell, so check your state in our [tax guides](https://www.brix.so/taxes) and read [sales tax on labor vs. materials](https://www.brix.so/learn/sales-tax-on-labor-vs-materials).

## What tools do you need to start a handyman business?

Buy for the jobs people actually call about: mounting, hanging, patching, adjusting, replacing. Stay on one cordless battery platform so every tool shares chargers and packs.

- **Drilling and driving.** Drill/driver, impact driver, a full bit and anchor kit. Most TV, shelf, curtain-rod and grab-bar jobs start here.
- **Cutting.** Circular saw, oscillating multi-tool, jigsaw, utility knives, a fine-tooth handsaw for trim.
- **Access.** A 6-foot step ladder and an extension ladder sized for the gutters in your area. This drives what vehicle you need.
- **Drywall and paint.** Knives, mesh and setting compound, sanding sponges, a small paint kit with drop cloths.
- **Measuring and layout.** Stud finder, 4-foot level, laser level, tape, a non-contact voltage tester before you touch any fixture.
- **Cleanup.** A shop vac and floor protection. Leaving the house cleaner than you found it is how you get the next call.

Stock the truck with a small bin system of common fasteners, anchors, caulk, wax rings and supply lines. Each trip to the store mid-job is time you usually can't bill, so charge a materials pickup fee or build it into your minimum.

### Handyman business launch checklist

## How should a new handyman price jobs?

Charge a minimum, then move your common jobs to flat prices. Hourly pricing punishes you for getting faster and makes customers watch the clock. A minimum covers the drive, setup and the first hour, so a 20-minute faucet aerator call still pays.

**What customers pay for common handyman jobs**

| Job or fee | Typical range | Pricing unit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hourly rate | $50–$150 | Per hour; self-employed pros mostly $50–$80, companies $75–$125 |
| Minimum service fee | $125–$200 | Per visit; covers travel, setup and up to an hour of labor |
| Trip fee (out-of-area) | $30–$80 | Per visit |
| TV mounting | $120–$250 | Per TV |
| Ceiling fan installation | $150–$300 | Per fan, replacing an existing fixture |
| Faucet replacement | $175–$800 | Per faucet, plus materials |
| Drywall patch (up to 4 × 4 ft) | $337–$863 | Per patch |
| Interior door repair | $75–$225 | Per door |

_Source: [Housecall Pro](https://www.housecallpro.com/resources/how-to-price-handyman-jobs/), updated Oct. 21, 2026. Job ranges come from 23,963 handyman service entries by its customers in the 12 months to Sept. 2026; hourly and fee ranges are aggregated from HomeGuide, Angi and Thumbtack._

Watch the dollar limit when you quote. A bathroom refresh that bundles a vanity, faucet, paint and a new light can pass $1,000 quickly, and in California swapping a fixture that needs a permit makes even a small job licensed work. Price the parts you can legally do, and refer the rest to a licensed trade.

1. **Build your rate from your costs.** The [contractor hourly rate calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/contractor-hourly-rate-calculator) turns your overhead and target pay into a billable rate.
2. **Flat-price your top five jobs.** Use the [flat rate pricing calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/flat-rate-pricing-calculator) with your real times from the first month. See [flat-rate pricing](https://www.brix.so/learn/flat-rate-pricing) for why it pays.
3. **Mark up materials.** A 25% markup is a 20% margin, not 25%. Check [markup vs. margin](https://www.brix.so/learn/markup-vs-margin) before you discount.

Job-by-job pricing guides are coming in [how much to charge for handyman work](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/handyman), [TV mounting](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/tv-mounting) and [drywall repair](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/drywall-repair).

## How do you get your first handyman customers?

Handyman work is a trust sale: someone is letting you into their house for a small job. Your first customers come from people who know you, then from neighbors of those customers, then from Google. Repeat customers matter more than in most trades, because a homeowner with a list keeps calling the person who showed up on time.

1. **Start with your own circle.** Text 30 people you know with what you do, your minimum and a photo of finished work. Ask each to forward it to one neighbor.
2. **Set up your Google Business Profile.** List the jobs you take (mounting, drywall repair, fixture swaps, assembly), your service area and real photos. See [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile).
3. **Work property managers and realtors.** Pre-listing punch lists and move-out repairs are steady, repeat work. Bring a certificate of insurance to the first meeting.
4. **Collect the honey-do list.** On every visit, ask what else is on the list and quote it before you leave. A second job in the same house has no drive time.
5. **Pick up the phone.** You'll be on a ladder when the next customer calls, and small-job customers call the next name on the list fast. The [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) puts a number on it.

Lead apps like Thumbtack, Angi and Taskrabbit can fill your first calendar, but you pay per lead or per job either way. Track which customers came from where, and once Google and referrals bring you enough work, cut the paid sources that only bring one-time jobs. Review requests the same day help most: use our [review request templates](https://www.brix.so/templates/google-review-request-templates).

## Your launch tech stack

A handyman does many small jobs, which means many calls, many quotes and many invoices. A $150 job that takes three phone calls and a paper invoice eats half its margin in office time. Set up five things before your first job: a business number, a booking calendar, quick quotes, card payments on site, and books you update weekly.

**Running the office side of a one-truck handyman business**

| Option | Works when | The catch |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Personal phone + notes app + paper invoices | Your first dozen jobs | Missed calls while you work; nothing reminds customers; receipts lost in the truck |
| Field service app (Jobber, Housecall Pro and others) | You want quotes, scheduling and invoicing in one place | Calls still go to voicemail while you're on a ladder. Compare in [Jobber alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/jobber-alternatives) |
| BRIX | You want the phone answered and books kept while you work | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX answers your business line while you're mid-job, books the visit and texts back anyone who hangs up. It sends the quote and the invoice from your phone and keeps the books synced to QuickBooks, so a week of small jobs doesn't turn into a weekend of paperwork.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Quotes and estimates](https://www.brix.so/features/quotes-estimates): Builds accurate quotes on site and follows up on every open estimate.
- [Bookkeeping and tax help](https://www.brix.so/features/bookkeeping-taxes): Keeps expenses categorized, tracks 1099 subcontractors and sales tax, and reminds you of quarterly estimated tax dates. BRIX does not file taxes or give tax advice.

## Is a handyman business profitable?

It can be, if you price by the job and keep drive time down. There's no reliable public figure for what new handyman owners take home, so work it out from your own plan: billable hours per week (usually far fewer than hours worked), times your effective rate, minus materials you didn't mark up, insurance, truck costs and taxes. Then compare it with what you'd earn as an employee, after counting the unpaid hours spent quoting and driving.

> **What moves handyman profit most**
>
> **Minimum charge.** Small jobs without a minimum lose money once you count the drive.
>
> **Job stacking.** Two or three tasks per visit, quoted before you leave.
>
> **Route density.** Customers in a few neighborhoods add billable hours to every day.
>
> **Licensing ceiling.** Once your best customers ask for work over your state's limit, a contractor license raises your average ticket.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much money do I need to start a handyman business?

In our illustrative example, a solo handyman with his own truck needs about $6,869: $3,500 up front plus three months of $1,123 in fixed costs. With a full tool kit and a used van, it's about $30,369. Put your own quotes into the calculator on this page.

### What is the most a handyman can charge without a license in California?

Under $1,000 per project, labor and materials included, since Jan. 1, 2025, per the CSLB. The exemption disappears if the job needs a building permit or if you employ anyone to help, and you can't split a bigger project into smaller invoices. Ads must say you're not licensed.

### Do handymen need a license in Florida?

Not for casual, minor or inconsequential jobs with total construction costs below $2,500, according to Florida DBPR. Work that needs a permit usually doesn't count as minor. Your county or city may have its own license, so check with the local building department.

### Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work?

Usually not beyond simple like-for-like swaps, and in many places not even those if a permit is required. Most states license electrical and plumbing work separately from general contracting. Keep a list of licensed electricians and plumbers to refer that work to.

### How much is handyman insurance?

Insureon reports handymen pay about $81 a month ($978 a year) for general liability and $42 a month for tools and equipment coverage. Workers' comp runs about $108 a month once you have employees. Quotes vary by state, limits and payroll.

### Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?

Most do both: a minimum service fee for small visits and flat prices for common jobs. Housecall Pro's data puts the minimum at $125–$200 and TV mounting at $120–$250. Flat prices reward you for getting faster and are easier for customers to say yes to.

### How do I get handyman customers fast?

Tell everyone you know, set up a Google Business Profile with photos, and ask every customer what else is on their list before you leave. Property managers and realtors send steady repeat work. Answer or text back every call quickly, because small-job customers rarely wait.
