# How to Start a Junk Removal Business in 2026 (Costs, Licenses and First Customers)

To start a junk removal business, line up a truck or dump trailer, learn every local dump's fees, check whether your city licenses haulers, insure the vehicle and your liability, and price by truck volume with dump fees built in. Using a truck you already own, our example start is about $7,290.

## Key takeaways

- With a pickup you own and basic moving gear, our illustrative start is about $7,290; a used truck plus a 14,000 lb dump trailer takes it to about $46,290.
- Dump fees set your floor. Fairfax County, Virginia charges $98 a ton for commercial waste in FY2027; King County, Washington charges $243.38 a ton.
- Weight matters legally: a truck-and-trailer combination of 26,001 lb or more with a trailer over 10,000 lb is a Class A CDL vehicle.
- Insureon's debris and junk removal customers pay a median $138 a month for general liability and $268 a month for commercial auto.
- Housecall Pro puts a full truckload at $600–$800 and most jobs at $70–$570.

## How much does it cost to start a junk removal business?

Your vehicle decides the budget. Start with a pickup you already own plus dollies, blankets and straps, and our example needs **$7,290** with three months of fixed costs in reserve. Buy a used truck and a 7x14 dump trailer and it's about **$46,290**. Insurance and the average load are cited; the rest are illustrative, so swap in your own numbers.

**Junk removal startup costs, line by line**

| Line item | Example amount | Source or basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Equipment | $2,000 hand tools and moving gear / $16,000 with a dump trailer | Illustrative, anchored to the retail prices in the equipment table |
| Truck | $0 if you own one / $25,000 used | Illustrative. Check payload and towing ratings, not just bed size |
| Business and hauler permits | $400 | Illustrative. Some cities charge far more (see below) |
| Launch marketing | $600 | Illustrative. Truck wrap or magnets, flyers, yard signs |
| Liability and equipment insurance | $180/mo | [Insureon](https://www.insureon.com/construction-contracting-business-insurance/debris-removal/cost): GL $138 + inland marine $42 |
| Phone and software | $100/mo | Illustrative |
| Fuel, maintenance and tires | $600/mo | Illustrative. Commercial auto is extra once the truck is in the business's name |
| Consumables | $150/mo | Illustrative. Contractor bags, gloves, tarps; dump fees go on each job |
| Ongoing marketing | $400/mo | Illustrative. Junk is a search-and-call business |

_Example: $3,000 up front and $1,430 a month; a 3-month reserve adds $4,290, for $7,290. Insurance verified 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a pickup and a helper on call**
>
> Up front: $2,000 of hand trucks, blankets, straps and tools, $400 of filings and permits, $600 of magnets and flyers: **$3,000**.
>
> Monthly: $180 insurance, $100 phone and software, $600 truck costs, $150 consumables, $400 marketing: **$1,430**.
>
> Add $4,290 of reserve and the start is **$7,290**. At LawnStarter's $225 average load, 7 loads a month cover fixed costs, but only if each price already covers that load's dump fee and fuel.

## What do dumps and transfer stations charge?

Tipping fees are the cost new haulers underestimate most. They're charged by weight (per ton), often with a minimum per load and extra fees for mattresses, tires and appliances. Here's what three facilities charge:

**Example disposal fees**

| Facility | Per ton | Minimums and surcharges | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fairfax County, VA (commercial, FY2027) | $98 trash; $109 construction debris; $59 brush | Minimum per load $39 / $49 / $98 by vehicle size; tire disposal from commercial haulers suspended | [Fairfax County](https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/sites/publicworks/files/Assets/documents/commercial-waste-disposal-rates-fy2027.pdf) |
| King County, WA | $243.38 | $40.25 minimum (up to 320 lb); refrigerant appliances $30 each; mattresses $33.39 each | [King County](https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/dnrp/waste-services/garbage-recycling-compost/solid-waste-facilities/disposal-fees) |
| Texas Disposal Systems, Creedmoor, TX (private landfill) | $60 plus fees, 2-ton minimum | Car and pickup loads $66 minimum; Freon removal $50 each; mattresses and sofas $25 each | [TDS gate rates](https://www.texasdisposal.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/TDS-Gate-Rates-2026.pdf) |

_Checked 2026-10-24. A ton of mixed household junk can cost $60 in one market and four times that in another, which is why a national price list doesn't work. Get your local schedule before you quote._

Cut disposal costs by sorting: donate usable furniture, sell metal to a scrap yard, and use recycling programs where they exist. The [Mattress Recycling Council](https://mattressrecyclingcouncil.org/) runs Bye Bye Mattress statewide in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island, and [PaintCare](https://www.paintcare.org/) takes leftover paint in a dozen-plus states and DC.

## Do you need a license for junk removal?

You'll need a business registration and local business license, and in some cities a hauler license or registration. The bigger legal questions are your vehicle's weight rating and the items you're allowed to haul.

- **City hauler rules vary widely.** New York City's Business Integrity Commission, for example, requires a Class 2 registration just to haul construction and demolition debris: $3,500 plus $500 per vehicle, renewed every two years. Many smaller cities only require a general business license. Ask before your first load, and ask whether commercial trash collection is franchised in your area.
- **Banned items.** Many states ban some items from landfills. Oregon, for example, has banned disposal of computers, monitors and TVs over 4 inches since Jan. 1, 2010 ([Oregon DEQ](https://www.oregon.gov/deq/FilterDocs/DisposalBanofCEDs.pdf)). Build a list of what your local facilities refuse.
- **Refrigerators, freezers and AC units.** EPA's [safe disposal rules](https://www.epa.gov/section608/stationary-refrigeration-safe-disposal-requirements) make the final disposer (the scrap yard or landfill) responsible for making sure refrigerant is recovered. If you deliver an appliance already evacuated, expect to provide a signed statement with the name and address of whoever recovered the refrigerant and the date. Otherwise, pay the facility's Freon fee.
- **Hazardous waste.** Paint thinner, pool chemicals, propane tanks and asbestos are not junk. Refuse them or refer them to your local household hazardous waste program.

### DOT numbers, CDLs and vehicle weight

Federal rules turn on GVWR (the manufacturer's weight rating), not what you actually load. These are the lines that matter for junk haulers:

**Federal weight thresholds**

| Threshold | What it triggers | Rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10,001 lb GVWR or GCWR, interstate | Commercial motor vehicle: USDOT number, driver medical certificate and safety rules | [49 CFR 390.5](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/390.5), [391.41](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/391.41) |
| 26,001 lb GVWR, single vehicle | Class B CDL | [49 CFR 383.91](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/383.91) |
| 26,001 lb GCWR with a towed unit over 10,000 lb | Class A CDL | [49 CFR 383.91](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/383.91) |

_Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate commercial vehicles. Check with your state DOT._

Here's the catch: a 7x14 dump trailer is often rated at 14,000 lb GVWR, which is over the 10,000 lb towed-unit line. Pair it with a heavy-duty pickup and the combined rating can reach 26,001 lb, which puts you in Class A CDL territory. Add up the ratings on both door stickers before you buy.

## What insurance does a junk removal business need?

Junk removal combines driving, heavy lifting and work inside customers' homes, so it's priced higher than most home services. Commercial auto and general liability are the two you can't skip.

**Median insurance premiums for debris and junk removal businesses**

| Policy | Per month | Per year | When you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $138 | $1,650 | Before the first job; scraped floors and dented door frames are common claims |
| Commercial auto | $268 | $3,212 | When the truck is used for business, especially titled to the business |
| Inland marine (tools and equipment) | $42 | $505 | Trailer contents, dollies and tools |
| Business owner's policy | $125 | $1,503 | If you have a yard or storage space |
| Workers' compensation | $175 | $2,101 | Your first helper; lifting injuries are the big risk |
| Commercial umbrella | $93 | $1,111 | Commercial and construction cleanouts |

Personal auto policies often exclude business use, so tell your agent what the truck does. More on [workers' comp](https://www.brix.so/learn/workers-compensation) and [general liability](https://www.brix.so/learn/general-liability-insurance).

## What equipment do you need for junk removal?

The truck is most of the cost. Everything else is about moving heavy, awkward things without hurting yourself or the house.

**Junk removal equipment with price anchors**

| Item | Example and price | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dump trailer | Load Trail 7x14, 14,000 lb GVWR, 9,730 lb payload: $14,595 | [Load Runner Trailers](https://www.loadrunnertrailers.com/en/inventory/69dead71917d66706cf5698c). Dumping in seconds saves labor at every stop |
| Appliance hand truck | Uline steel appliance hand truck, 750 lb: about $305 | [Uline](https://uline.com/BL_1820/Steel-Appliance-Hand-Trucks) |
| Ratchet straps | Uline 2 in. x 27 ft, 3,333 lb working load limit: $27 each | [Uline](https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-10484/Cargo-Control/Uline-Ratchet-Tie-Downs-Delta-Ring-2-x-27-10000-lb-Capacity) |
| Moving blankets, furniture dolly, tarps | Illustrative | Protect walls and floors on the way out |
| Contractor bags, shovels, rakes, brooms, gloves | Illustrative | Sweep up after every job; customers notice |
| Reciprocating saw and pry bar | Illustrative | Break down hot tubs, sheds and furniture |

_Retail prices checked 2026-10-24._

Tarp and strap every load. Debris that blows off an open trailer is a liability claim and, in many places, a fine. Check payments on a truck or trailer with the [equipment loan calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/equipment-loan-calculator).

### Junk removal business launch checklist

**Day 1**

- [ ] Print the fee schedule for every landfill and transfer station within 30 minutes, including minimums and per-item surcharges
- [ ] Ask your city and county whether haulers need a license, registration or franchise permit
- [ ] Add up your truck and trailer GVWR and check it against the USDOT and CDL thresholds
- [ ] Register the business, get a free EIN and open a business bank account
- [ ] Buy general liability, commercial auto and inland marine coverage before the first load
- [ ] Write a price sheet by truck volume (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, full) with a minimum charge and item surcharges
- [ ] Write a list of items you won't take: paint, chemicals, propane tanks, asbestos and anything your dump refuses
- [ ] Get a business phone number on the truck and every flyer

**Month 3**

- [ ] Compare dump fees against what you charged on each job and fix loads you priced too low
- [ ] Find a donation center, a scrap metal yard and a mattress or e-waste recycler, and use them to cut tipping fees
- [ ] Ask every customer for a Google review before you drive away
- [ ] Call property managers, realtors and estate sale companies for repeat cleanouts
- [ ] Text back missed calls within minutes; junk jobs go to whoever shows up first
- [ ] Keep weight tickets and dump receipts with each job for your books

**Year 1**

- [ ] Add workers' comp and lifting training before your first helper starts
- [ ] Decide whether a bigger truck or a dump trailer pays off, and whether it changes your DOT or CDL status
- [ ] Offer cleanouts, light demolition or appliance haul-away if your area has demand
- [ ] Raise your minimum and per-load prices when tipping fees go up
- [ ] Review insurance limits before taking commercial or construction debris work
- [ ] Track revenue by lead source and stop paying for the ones that don't book

## How to price your first junk removal jobs

Price by how much of the truck the load fills, with a minimum charge and surcharges for items your dump charges extra for. Then check every job: price minus dump fee minus fuel minus labor should still leave profit.

**What customers pay for junk removal**

| Load | Housecall Pro | LawnStarter |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Minimum or 1/8 truck | $70–$150 minimum | $90 (1/8 truck) |
| Single item | $60–$150 | Not broken out |
| 1/4 truck | Not broken out | $160 |
| 1/2 truck | $300–$500 | $375 |
| Full truck | $600–$800 | $675 (up to 20 cu yd) |
| Mattress | $75–$150 | Not broken out |
| Appliance | $60–$180 | Not broken out |
| Typical job | $70–$570 | $225 average ($115–$450) |

Your volume-based price has to absorb weight-based dump fees, so heavy loads (shingles, concrete, wet carpet, dirt) need their own pricing or a weight cap. Build quotes in the [job pricing calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/job-pricing-calculator) and see more in [how much to charge for junk removal](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/junk-removal). Quote on site or from photos; avoid firm phone quotes for anything bigger than a few items.

## How do you get your first junk removal customers?

Junk removal is urgent and local: someone is moving, a tenant left a mess, or a parent's house has to be cleared. People search, call two or three companies and book the first one that answers with a price and a time.

1. **Get on Google first.** Set up a [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile) with your service area, prices from and photos of loaded trucks.
2. **Call the people who create junk.** Realtors, property managers, estate sale companies, contractors and storage facilities send repeat work.
3. **Wrap or letter the truck.** A clean, marked truck parked at a job works as a billboard for the whole street.
4. **Offer same-day and next-day slots.** Speed is a selling point. Customers pay for "gone by tomorrow."
5. **Answer every call.** You'll be carrying a couch when the phone rings, and that caller will book the next company. The [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) shows the cost.

## Your launch tech stack

A junk business needs fast answers more than complex software: pick up the phone, quote from photos, book a slot, collect payment on site and track dump fees per job. You can do it on a phone and a spreadsheet at first; it breaks when you're unloading at the transfer station and three people call.

**Options for the office side**

| Option | Good for | Watch for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Phone, texts and a spreadsheet | The first few weeks | Missed calls while lifting; dump receipts lost in the cab |
| Field service software (Jobber, Housecall Pro, Workiz, others) | Scheduling, quotes and payments | Calls still need you; see [Workiz alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/workiz-alternatives) |
| BRIX | Calls answered and jobs booked while you're hauling | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX answers your business line while you're hauling, collects the address and photos, books the pickup and texts back callers who hang up. It invoices with a pay link at the curb and keeps dump receipts and fuel in books synced to QuickBooks.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Invoicing and payments](https://www.brix.so/features/invoicing-payments): Turns finished jobs into invoices and politely chases unpaid ones until the money is in your account.
- [Bookkeeping and tax help](https://www.brix.so/features/bookkeeping-taxes): Keeps expenses categorized, tracks 1099 subcontractors and sales tax, and reminds you of quarterly estimated tax dates. BRIX does not file taxes or give tax advice.

## How much can a junk removal business make?

Per job, profit is the price minus dump fees, fuel and labor. Per month, it's that times your job count, minus fixed costs. Published startup and income figures for this trade disagree with each other, and there's no reliable public first-year income number, so build your own model. Start with your local tipping fee, because it changes the answer more than anything else.

> **What moves junk removal profit**
>
> **Dump fees per ton** in your market, and how much you divert to donation and scrap.
>
> **Jobs per day.** Clustering pickups near the transfer station saves hours.
>
> **Heavy-load pricing.** Volume pricing loses money on concrete and shingles.
>
> **Repeat referrers.** Property managers and realtors book again without ad spend.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to start a junk removal business?

In our illustrative example, about $7,290 with a pickup you already own and basic moving gear, including three months of fixed costs. With a used truck and a 7x14 dump trailer it's about $46,290. Your vehicle is the biggest variable.

### Do I need a license to start a junk removal business?

You need a business registration and usually a local business license. Some cities also license haulers: New York City requires a $3,500 Business Integrity Commission registration plus $500 per vehicle just to haul construction debris. Check your city and county, and check DOT rules for your vehicle's weight rating.

### Do I need a CDL for junk removal?

Not for most pickups and small box trucks. Federal rules require a Class B CDL for a single vehicle of 26,001 lb GVWR or more and a Class A CDL for combinations of 26,001 lb or more when the trailer is rated over 10,000 lb. A heavy pickup towing a 14,000 lb dump trailer can cross that line.

### How much does it cost to dump junk?

It depends on your area. Fairfax County, Virginia charges $98 a ton for commercial waste in FY2027 with per-load minimums, King County, Washington charges $243.38 a ton with a $40.25 minimum, and a Texas private landfill near Austin charges $60 a ton plus fees. Mattresses, tires and appliances often cost extra.

### How much is insurance for a junk removal business?

Insureon reports median premiums of $138 a month for general liability, $268 a month for commercial auto and $175 a month for workers' comp for debris and junk removal businesses (updated July 27, 2026). Your quote depends on your vehicle, state and payroll.

### How should I price junk removal jobs?

Most companies price by truck volume, with a minimum charge and item surcharges. Housecall Pro reports minimums of $70–$150 and full truckloads of $600–$800. Make sure each price covers that load's dump fee, fuel and labor, and charge separately for heavy debris.

### Can I take refrigerators and TVs?

Usually, but with rules. EPA makes the final disposer responsible for refrigerant recovery, so scrap yards may require a signed recovery statement or charge a Freon fee. Some states ban TVs and computers from landfills, Oregon among them, so route electronics to a recycler.
