# How to Start a Landscaping Business in 2026 (Costs, Licenses and First Customers)

To start a landscaping business, decide whether you'll do maintenance, installs or both, then check your state's landscape and irrigation licensing, insure your equipment, register the business and price installs with materials and labor shown separately. With a truck you own and a used mower and trailer, our example comes to about $13,375.

## Key takeaways

- Our illustrative startup budget is about $13,375 with used equipment and a truck you own, and about $60,375 with new equipment and a used truck.
- Some states license landscape work. California requires a C-27 license on jobs of $1,000 or more (or any job that needs a permit or a hired worker), Texas licenses irrigators, and Louisiana licenses landscape horticulturists.
- Insureon's landscaping customers pay about $63 a month for general liability and $53 a month to insure tools and equipment.
- LawnStarter puts the average professional landscaping project at $1,400–$1,660, so a few install jobs carry a month of fixed costs.
- Maintenance clients are where most install work comes from. Treat mowing and bed care as your sales channel, not just your income.

## How much does it cost to start a landscaping business?

Landscaping costs more to start than mowing because installs need hauling, digging and compaction gear, and a truck that can pull a loaded trailer. Our example owner buys a used mower and trailer and drives a truck he already has: **$13,375** including three months of fixed costs. With new equipment and a used truck, the same plan needs about **$60,375**. Insurance and the average job price are cited; every other default is an illustrative round number, so swap in your own dealer quotes.

**Landscaping startup costs, line by line**

| Line item | Example amount | Source or basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Equipment | $8,000 used / $35,000 new | Illustrative. Includes trailer; rent skid steers and sod cutters by the day at first |
| Truck | $0 if you own one / $20,000 used | Illustrative. It has to tow your loaded trailer legally |
| Licenses, filings and exams | $600 | Illustrative. Higher in states that license landscapers or irrigators |
| Launch marketing | $800 | Illustrative. Truck lettering, yard signs, a portfolio website |
| Insurance and license bond | $125/mo | [Insureon](https://www.insureon.com/landscaping-business-insurance/cost): GL $63, tools and equipment $53, license bond $9 |
| Phone and software | $100/mo | Illustrative |
| Fuel, maintenance and truck payment | $500/mo | Illustrative |
| Consumables (fuel mix, blades, string, fabric, stakes) | $300/mo | Illustrative. Project materials go on each quote |
| Ongoing marketing | $300/mo | Illustrative |

_Example: $9,400 up front plus $1,325 a month. A 3-month cushion adds $3,975, so plan on $13,375. Insurance verified 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a maintenance-plus-installs start with a truck you own**
>
> Up front: $8,000 of used equipment and trailer, $600 of filings and license fees, $800 of signs and lettering, for **$9,400**.
>
> Every month: $125 insurance and bond, $100 phone and software, $500 truck costs, $300 consumables and $300 marketing, for **$1,325**.
>
> Three months of cushion is $3,975. At LawnStarter's $1,530 average project midpoint, 1 install a month covers the fixed costs on paper. Plants, stone and rented machines come out of that price first, which is why installs need a deposit.

## Do you need a license to do landscaping?

It depends on the state and on the work. Mowing, edging and weeding usually need only a business license. Building things in the yard (patios, walls, irrigation, lighting, drainage) is where state licensing starts in many places. Three examples show how differently states draw the line:

**Examples of state landscape licensing**

| State | What's licensed | Key numbers | Official source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| California | C-27 Landscaping contractor for landscape construction: patios, walls, irrigation, lighting, drainage, plants and sod | License needed on jobs of $1,000+ in labor and materials, or any job that needs a permit or a hired worker (since Jan. 1, 2025) | [CSLB AB 2622 notice](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/IndustryBulletins/2024/AB%202622%20Implementation.FINAL.pdf), [C-27](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/about_us/library/licensing_classifications/Licensing_Classifications_Detail.aspx?Class=C27) |
| Texas | Landscape Irrigator license for anyone who sells, designs, installs, maintains or repairs an irrigation system | $111 fee; Basic Irrigator Licensing Course; 70% on each exam section; no experience requirement | [TCEQ](https://www.tceq.texas.gov/licensing/licenses/lilic) |
| Louisiana | Landscape Horticulturist license for bed prep, planting, sod, pruning, fertilizing and landscape maintenance | $150 exam fee, 70% to pass, $125 license fee; mowing, edging and hand-weeding are exempt | [LDAF](https://www.ldaf.la.gov/plants/nurseries-landscaping) |

_Checked against each agency's page on 2026-10-24. Other states have their own rules; search your state's contractor board, department of agriculture and environmental agency before you bid installs._

California's line is the one that catches new landscapers. The CSLB's consumer guide says gardeners who mow, weed and trim shrubs generally don't need a state license, but its list of projects that do includes irrigation, landscape lighting, drainage, trenching, plants and sod. Under [AB 2622](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/IndustryBulletins/2024/AB%202622%20Implementation.FINAL.pdf), the small-job exemption rose to $1,000 on Jan. 1, 2025, but it disappears if the job needs a permit or you hire anyone to help. Unlicensed operators who advertise must say they aren't licensed.

- **Design for a fee is often separate.** Louisiana's horticulturist license, for example, does not authorize drawing landscape designs for a fee. Landscape architecture is its own licensed profession in many states, so don't use that title unless you hold the license.
- **Chemicals add a license.** Weed and insect control for clients usually requires a state pesticide applicator license. Our [lawn care startup guide](https://www.brix.so/start/lawn-care) covers how that works.
- **Contractor licensing is a separate layer.** Hardscape and retaining walls can fall under general contractor rules in some states. See [contractor licenses](https://www.brix.so/learn/contractor-license).

### Call 811 before every dig

Planting trees, setting posts, trenching irrigation and digging a patio base all hit buried lines sooner or later. The [811 service](https://811beforeyoudig.com/) is free: contact it a few business days before you dig, wait until every utility has responded and marked its lines, then dig carefully around the marks. Put the ticket number on the work order so the whole crew knows the locate is done.

## What insurance does a landscaping business need?

Start with general liability for property damage and injuries, and add tools and equipment coverage (inland marine) because your mower and trailer leave the yard every day. A standard business owner's policy doesn't follow gear onto job sites. Add a bond if your state license requires one.

**Insureon landscaping customers' insurance costs**

| Policy | Per month | Per year | When to buy it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $63 | $761 | Before the first job; commercial clients ask for a certificate |
| Tools and equipment (inland marine) | $53 | $637 | As soon as you own a mower and trailer worth stealing |
| License and permit bond | $9 | $112 | If your state or city license requires one |
| Business owner's policy | $92 | $1,101 | If you rent a yard or shop with property to insure |
| Workers' compensation | $150 | $1,802 | Before your first employee in most states |
| Commercial auto | $299 | $3,590 | Truck titled to the business or crew driving it |
| Commercial umbrella | $92 | $1,101 | Larger installs and commercial contracts |

Ask for a [certificate of insurance](https://www.brix.so/learn/certificate-of-insurance) from any subcontractor you use (a mason, an electrician for lighting) and keep it on file. Read more on [workers' comp](https://www.brix.so/learn/workers-compensation) and [bonding and insurance costs](https://www.brix.so/learn/contractor-bonding-and-insurance-cost).

### Business setup: LLC, EIN and bank account

The [SBA](https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business/choose-business-structure) notes that a sole proprietor is personally liable for business debts, while an LLC generally shields personal assets. Landscapers dig near foundations and run heavy machines on other people's property, so many form an LLC early. Get your [EIN](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/get-an-employer-identification-number) free from the IRS, open a separate account, and check your state's sales tax rules on plants and materials (see [sales tax on labor vs. materials](https://www.brix.so/learn/sales-tax-on-labor-vs-materials)).

## What equipment do you need to start landscaping?

Buy what you'll use every week and rent what you'll use a few days a season. A new skid steer sitting in the yard eats cash that should be buying materials for paid jobs.

**Buy, rent or wait**

| Equipment | Buy on day one? | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mower (zero-turn or walk-behind), trimmer, blower | Buy | Maintenance work every week pays for them |
| Utility or dump trailer | Buy | You haul mulch, stone, plants and debris on almost every job |
| Shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, tampers, string line, levels | Buy | Cheap, and every install uses them |
| Compact track loader or mini skid steer | Rent | Install days only, until you book enough grading work |
| Plate compactor, sod cutter, trencher, auger | Rent | A few days per project at first |
| Laser level | Buy by month 3 | Patios and drainage need accurate grade |

Use the [mulch](https://www.brix.so/tools/mulch-calculator), [gravel](https://www.brix.so/tools/gravel-calculator) and [topsoil](https://www.brix.so/tools/topsoil-calculator) calculators to order materials by the cubic yard, and the [equipment loan calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/equipment-loan-calculator) before you finance a machine. Bought equipment may qualify for the [Section 179 deduction](https://www.brix.so/learn/section-179-deduction); ask your tax preparer.

## A one-page landscaping business plan

You don't need a 30-page plan. You need answers to five questions on one page, and you should update them each winter.

1. **Service mix.** What share of revenue will be maintenance, installs, hardscape, irrigation and winter work?
2. **Service area.** Which zip codes, and how far will you drive for a maintenance stop versus an install?
3. **Licenses.** Which of your planned services need a state license, and when will you have it?
4. **Crew and equipment.** Who works with you, what you'll buy, and what you'll rent.
5. **Break-even.** Monthly fixed costs (the calculator above) divided by your gross profit per job. That's how many jobs keep the lights on.

## How to price your first landscaping jobs

Quote installs as materials plus labor plus equipment plus profit, and show the customer a clear project total. Maintenance is priced per visit or per month. Use what homeowners already pay as a sanity check, not as your price.

**What homeowners pay for common landscaping work**

| Work | Typical range | Unit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Professional landscaping (average project) | $1,400–$1,660 | Per project |
| General landscaping by area | $4.50–$14.50 | Per sq ft |
| Sod installation | $0.60–$1.65 | Per sq ft, plus labor |
| Patio | $8–$24 | Per sq ft |
| Walkway | $9–$20 | Per sq ft |
| Landscape edging | $3.50–$8.80 | Per linear ft |
| Mulching | $77–$94 | Per cubic yard |
| Sprinkler system | $0.29–$0.48 | Per sq ft |
| Landscape design | $1,390–$6,850 | Per plan |

Build each quote in the [job pricing calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/job-pricing-calculator) and check your markup with the [markup and margin calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/markup-margin-calculator). A 50% markup on plants is a 33% margin, not 50%, which is the mistake that shrinks install profit. For recurring work, see [how much to charge for lawn mowing](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/lawn-mowing) and [landscaping hourly rates](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/landscaping-hourly). Two habits protect you from day one:

- **Take a deposit on installs** big enough to cover plants, stone and machine rental before you order anything.
- **Put a plant warranty in writing**, with what voids it (no watering, no irrigation), so a dead shrub doesn't become a free replacement.

## How do you get your first landscaping customers?

Start with maintenance clients, because every yard you service weekly is a yard you'll be asked to redo. Then use photos of finished installs to sell the next one.

1. **Pick up maintenance routes in a few neighborhoods.** Dense routes cut drive time and put your trailer in front of neighbors every week.
2. **Photograph every project.** Before, during and after. Post them to your [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile) and your website; installs sell on pictures.
3. **Walk the property with every maintenance client each spring.** Point out the dead bed, the low spot that floods, the walkway that heaves. Quote it on the spot.
4. **Partner with trades you don't do.** Fence builders, pool companies, roofers and home inspectors see yards that need work. Swap referrals.
5. **Answer the phone during install season.** Spring calls come while you're running a machine. A missed install inquiry can be a four-figure job; the [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) puts a number on it.

Need a name first? Try the [landscaping business name generator](https://www.brix.so/generators/business-name/landscaping). More lead ideas are in [landscaping sales](https://www.brix.so/for/landscaping/sales).

### Planning for a crew

Landscaping is seasonal, and many companies fill spring crews with H-2B temporary workers. USCIS says Congress caps H-2B at 66,000 visas a fiscal year, split into 33,000 for jobs starting October through March and 33,000 for jobs starting April through September. If you'll need seasonal help in year two, start learning the filing calendar in year one, and add [workers' comp](https://www.brix.so/learn/workers-compensation) before anyone starts.

## Your launch tech stack

A landscaping office has to quote big jobs, collect deposits, schedule crews and keep maintenance routes running, often from a truck cab. A spreadsheet and your cell phone work for the first season. They stop working when you're on an install and three people call about spring cleanups.

**Options for the office side**

| Option | Works when | Breaks down when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cell phone, spreadsheet, paper quotes | A handful of maintenance clients | Install season: missed calls, lost deposits, forgotten follow-ups |
| Field service software (Jobber, Housecall Pro, others) | You want routes, quotes and invoices in one app | Calls still need a person; compare in [Jobber alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/jobber-alternatives) |
| BRIX | You want calls answered and quotes followed up while you're on a machine | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX picks up your business line while you're running a mower or a skid steer, books the estimate visit, and texts back anyone who hangs up. It sends quotes with deposit links, follows up on the ones that go quiet, and keeps your books synced to QuickBooks.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Quotes and estimates](https://www.brix.so/features/quotes-estimates): Builds accurate quotes on site and follows up on every open estimate.
- [Invoicing and payments](https://www.brix.so/features/invoicing-payments): Turns finished jobs into invoices and politely chases unpaid ones until the money is in your account.

## How much can a new landscaping business make?

There's no trustworthy public number for first-year landscaping profit, and the spread between a mowing-heavy and an install-heavy company is huge. Run your own: install jobs per month × average gross profit per job, plus maintenance clients × monthly fee × months in your season, minus fixed costs and taxes. Then check that the result still works in your slowest month.

> **What moves landscaping profit**
>
> **Install mix.** Hardscape and irrigation carry more profit per day than mowing, and in some states need a license.
>
> **Materials markup.** Know your markup vs. margin; see [markup vs. margin](https://www.brix.so/learn/markup-vs-margin).
>
> **Equipment days.** Owned machines that sit idle are a monthly cost; rented ones are a job cost.
>
> **Winter.** Snow, holiday lighting or booked design work keeps cash coming in the off season.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to start a landscaping business?

In our illustrative example, about $13,375 with used equipment and a truck you already own, including three months of fixed costs. With new equipment and a used truck, about $60,375. Renting big machines by the job instead of buying keeps the start closer to the low end.

### Do I need a license to start a landscaping business?

You need a business registration and usually a local business license. Some states also license the work: California requires a C-27 license on jobs of $1,000 or more or any job needing a permit or helper, Texas licenses irrigators, and Louisiana licenses landscape horticulturists. Check your state's boards before bidding installs.

### Do I need a license to mow lawns?

Usually not beyond a business license. California's CSLB says gardeners who mow, weed and trim generally don't need a state contractor license, and Louisiana says lawn cutting, edging and hand-weeding aren't regulated. Applying fertilizer or weed control is different and often needs a pesticide license.

### How much is landscaping business insurance?

Insureon's landscaping customers pay about $63 a month for general liability, $53 a month for tools and equipment coverage, $150 a month for workers' comp and $299 a month for commercial auto (updated Oct. 12, 2026). Your quote depends on state, payroll and limits.

### What equipment do I need to start landscaping?

A mower, trimmer, blower, hand tools, wheelbarrows and a trailer cover maintenance and small installs. Rent compact loaders, plate compactors and sod cutters by the day until you have enough install work to keep them busy, then decide whether buying pays off.

### What's the difference between lawn care and landscaping?

Lawn care is recurring maintenance: mowing, edging, leaf cleanup and often fertilizing. Landscaping adds design and construction, like beds, sod, patios, walls, lighting and irrigation, which costs more to start and is more likely to need a state license. Many companies start in lawn care and add installs.

### Is landscaping a profitable business to start?

It can be, but profit depends on your mix of installs and maintenance, your materials markup and how busy your equipment stays. LawnStarter puts the average landscaping project at $1,400–$1,660 to the homeowner. Work out gross profit per job from your own costs before counting on any income figure.
