# How to Start a Lawn Care Business in 2026 (Costs, Licenses and First Customers)

To start a lawn care business, register it, insure your mower and your liability, buy a commercial mower, trimmer and blower, and build a route of weekly clients. Mowing alone usually needs only a business license; applying weed control for hire needs a state pesticide license. Our example start costs about $6,647.

## Key takeaways

- A mowing-only start with a push mower and a vehicle you own is about $6,647 in our illustrative example; a zero-turn, trailer and used truck push it to about $33,647.
- Mowing doesn't need a pesticide license. Spraying weed killer for hire usually does, and Florida also certifies anyone applying fertilizer commercially.
- Insureon's lawn care customers pay a median $57 a month for general liability and $42 a month to cover their tools and equipment.
- LawnStarter puts a typical mow at $44–$71 a visit (average $57), so you need a full route, not a few lawns, to make it work.
- Route density is the profit lever: ten lawns on one street beat ten lawns across town.

## How much does it cost to start a lawn care business?

Lawn care is cheap to enter and expensive to scale. A solo operator with a commercial push mower, trimmer, blower and a vehicle already in the driveway needs about **$6,647** in our example, three months of fixed costs included. Switch to a zero-turn, a trailer and a used truck and it's about **$33,647**. Insurance and the visit price are cited; the rest are illustrative round numbers you should replace with dealer quotes.

**Lawn care startup costs, line by line**

| Line item | Example amount | Source or basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mowing equipment | $3,000 push-mower kit / $15,000 zero-turn kit | Illustrative. Price anchors in the equipment section below |
| Vehicle | $0 if you own one / $15,000 used truck | Illustrative. A push-mower route can start from an SUV and small trailer |
| Registration and licenses | $300 | Illustrative. Add applicator license fees if you'll spray |
| Launch marketing | $500 | Illustrative. Door hangers, yard signs, a one-page website |
| Liability and equipment insurance | $99/mo | [Insureon lawn care](https://www.insureon.com/landscaping-business-insurance/lawn-care/cost): GL $57 + tools $42 |
| Phone and software | $100/mo | Illustrative |
| Fuel and maintenance | $400/mo | Illustrative. Mower fuel, blades, oil, truck fuel |
| Consumables | $150/mo | Illustrative. Trimmer line, bags, two-stroke oil |
| Ongoing marketing | $200/mo | Illustrative |

_Example: $3,800 up front and $949 a month. Three months of cushion is $2,847, so plan on $6,647. Insurance verified 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a mowing route from a vehicle you already own**
>
> Up front: $3,000 for a commercial push mower, trimmer, edger and blower, $300 to register, and $500 of door hangers and signs: **$3,800**.
>
> Monthly: $99 insurance, $100 phone and software, $400 fuel and upkeep, $150 consumables and $200 marketing: **$949**.
>
> With three months of cushion ($2,847), the total is **$6,647**. At $57 a mow, it takes 17 mows a month just to cover fixed costs, which is why lawn care lives or dies on a full, tight route.

## Do you need a license for lawn care?

For mowing, edging and blowing, usually just a business license and registration. The license that matters in lawn care is the **pesticide applicator license**, and it turns on whether you apply weed control, insect control or (in some states) fertilizer for hire.

The [EPA](https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-worker-safety/how-get-certified-pesticide-applicator) explains the framework: federal law requires certification to apply restricted-use pesticides, states certify applicators, and many states require every commercial applicator to be certified, not just those using restricted products. Weed-and-feed and most lawn herbicides are general-use products, but applying them for pay can still require a state license.

**How four states treat lawn chemical applications for hire**

| State | Rule for lawn care companies | Numbers | Official source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Texas | Anyone applying any pesticide for hire to lawns, trees, ornamentals or weeds must be licensed by TDA; fertilizer-only applicators are exempt | Ag license category 3A or 5, or a Structural Pest Control license with Lawn and Ornamental or Weed Control | [TDA](https://texasagriculture.gov/Regulatory-Programs/Pesticides/Agricultural-Applicators/Applying-Pesticides-to-Lawns-Trees-Ornamentals) |
| Florida | Anyone applying commercial fertilizer to an urban landscape must be certified (Limited Urban Commercial Fertilizer Applicator) | GI-BMP training first; $25 fee; good for 4 years; 4 CE hours to renew | [s. 482.1562 F.S.](https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2024/482.1562), [UF/IFAS](https://ffl.ifas.ufl.edu/ffl-and-you/gi-bmp-program/fertilizer-certification/) |
| New York | Commercial applicators are certified by DEC by category (3A ornamentals, shade trees and turf; 3B turf) | $100 exam (core + one category); $450 certification with one category; core is 50 questions, 35 to pass | [NY DEC](https://dec.ny.gov/environmental-protection/pesticides/pesticide-applicator-technician-certification/how-to-become-a-certified-commercial-pesticide-applicator-or-technician) |
| Illinois | Anyone applying general-use pesticides for hire must be licensed; a license isn't required to apply fertilizer alone | Exams are 70% to pass | [Illinois Extension](https://extension.illinois.edu/psep/lawn-care-business-pesticide-licensing-do-list) |

_Checked against each source on 2026-10-24. Rules, fees and categories change; confirm with your state department of agriculture or environmental agency before you spray._

Mowing-only companies are clearly outside these rules. San Mateo County, California, puts it plainly: if you don't apply any pesticides as part of your service, you don't need a license from the state Department of Pesticide Regulation, but even incidental applications require one. That's the trap: spot-spraying a client's driveway cracks "as a favor" is a for-hire application.

## What insurance does a lawn care business need?

Mowers throw rocks through windows and slide into parked cars, so general liability comes first. Tools and equipment coverage protects the mower, trimmer and blower on the trailer, where a business owner's policy won't follow them.

**Median insurance premiums for lawn care businesses**

| Policy | Per month | Per year | When you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $57 | $685 | Before your first mow |
| Tools and equipment | $42 | $503 | Once your gear is worth more than you'd want to replace out of pocket |
| License and permit bond | $9 | $112 | If your city or state license requires one |
| Business owner's policy | $85 | $1,025 | If you rent storage or a shop |
| Workers' compensation | $123 | $1,476 | Your first helper, in most states |
| Commercial auto | $255 | $3,062 | Truck titled to the business, or employees driving |

For business structure, the trade-off is the same as any trade: an LLC generally protects personal assets, a sole proprietorship doesn't, and both pay [self-employment tax](https://www.brix.so/learn/self-employment-tax) on profit. ## What equipment do you need to start a lawn care business?

Buy commercial-grade for the tools that run every day. Homeowner mowers wear out fast at 30 lawns a week, and a breakdown mid-route costs a day of income.

**Lawn care equipment with list price anchors**

| Tool | Example model and list price | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Zero-turn mower | Toro Z Master 2000 MyRIDE HDX 52 in.: $11,599 | [Toro](https://www.toro.com/en/product/77291); dealer sale only. Worth it once you mow larger lots all day |
| String trimmer | STIHL FS 91 R: $379.99 | [STIHL](https://www.stihlusa.com/products/trimmers-and-brushcutters/professional-trimmers/fs91r/) |
| Backpack blower | ECHO PB-580T: $449.99 MSRP | [ECHO](https://www.echo-usa.com/blowers/pb-580t) |
| Commercial 21 in. push mower | Price varies by dealer | Gates, small yards and slopes the zero-turn can't reach |
| Edger, hand tools, gas cans, spare blades | Illustrative | Keep a second set of blades sharpened |
| Open trailer | Illustrative | Needed once you add a riding mower |

Protect your hearing from day one. OSHA's [noise standard](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/1910.95) sets 90 dBA as the 8-hour limit and requires a hearing conservation program for employees exposed at an 85 dBA 8-hour average. Engine-powered mowers, trimmers and backpack blowers are loud, and a full route day is long. Finance a big mower only after checking the payment in the [equipment loan calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/equipment-loan-calculator).

### Lawn care business launch checklist

**Day 1**

- [ ] Decide whether you'll mow only or also apply fertilizer and weed control (that decision sets your licensing)
- [ ] Register the business, get a free EIN and open a separate checking account
- [ ] Get general liability and tools and equipment coverage before you mow a client's lawn
- [ ] Pick a tight service area of a few neighborhoods so your route stays short
- [ ] Write a price sheet by lot size, with a minimum charge and a first-cut surcharge
- [ ] Get a business phone number and put it on yard signs and door hangers
- [ ] Buy hearing protection and safety glasses along with the mower

**Month 3**

- [ ] Put every client on a weekly or biweekly route day and stop taking one-off mows far from the route
- [ ] Time each stop and re-quote lawns that take longer than you priced
- [ ] Offer spring and fall cleanups, aeration and leaf removal to your mowing clients
- [ ] Ask for a Google review after the third mow, once the lawn looks its best
- [ ] Set money aside every week for taxes and mower repairs
- [ ] Text back missed calls between stops

**Year 1**

- [ ] If you want to add fertilizer or weed control, get your state's commercial applicator license first
- [ ] Sell season-long agreements for next year before this season ends
- [ ] Plan off-season income: leaf cleanup, snow, holiday lighting or a planned break
- [ ] Decide on a zero-turn or stand-on mower based on the acreage you actually mow
- [ ] Add workers' comp before your first helper starts
- [ ] Raise rates on new clients once your route days are full

## How to price your first lawn care jobs

Price per visit by lot size, with a minimum charge, and quote the first cut higher if the grass is overgrown. Then time every stop. A lawn that takes 50 minutes at your 30-minute price is losing money every week all season.

**What customers typically pay for mowing**

| Lawn size or unit | LawnStarter | Housecall Pro |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Typical visit | $44–$71 (average $57) | $50–$80 (mow, trim and blow) |
| Up to 1/4 acre | $41–$61 | $45–$85 for a quarter acre |
| 1/2 to 1 acre | $59–$114 | $50–$200 per acre per visit |
| Hourly | $32–$68 | $32–$68 |
| Minimum charge | About $30 | Not stated |

The full method, including a per-visit calculator and seasonal contract math, is in [how much to charge for lawn mowing](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/lawn-mowing). Build in drive time with the [job pricing calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/job-pricing-calculator), and check your hourly target in the [contractor hourly rate calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/contractor-hourly-rate-calculator).

### Plan the season before you sell it

Your mowing season depends on your grass. [Penn State Extension](https://extension.psu.edu/turfgrass-species-for-pennsylvania) notes that cool-season grasses grow fastest in spring and fall and can go semi-dormant in hot, dry summers, while warm-season grasses grow fastest in hot weather and go dormant from late fall to early spring. In the North that means a spring rush, a summer slowdown and a fall surge; in the South, a long summer peak. Price season-long agreements so revenue doesn't drop with the grass.

## How do you get your first lawn care customers?

Pick a few neighborhoods and saturate them. Every new lawn on an existing street adds income without adding much drive time.

1. **Door hangers around every lawn you mow.** Hit the ten houses on either side the same day you mow. Neighbors just watched you do the work.
2. **Set up a Google Business Profile with your service area.** List the neighborhoods you cover and post before-and-after photos of edged lawns. See [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile).
3. **Post on Nextdoor and local groups in spring.** Homeowners ask for mowing recommendations in March and April. Be there with prices from.
4. **Offer a route discount.** A small discount for weekly service beats chasing one-time mows across town.
5. **Pick up the phone between stops.** Spring calls come while the mower is running. If a caller hits voicemail, they call the next name. The [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) shows the season-long cost.

Naming the business first? Try the [lawn care business name generator](https://www.brix.so/generators/business-name/lawn-care). When you're ready to add installs, see [how to start a landscaping business](https://www.brix.so/start/landscaping).

### When to hire

Hire when your route days are full and you're turning work away, not before. The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/building-and-grounds-cleaning/grounds-maintenance-workers.htm) puts the May 2025 median pay for landscaping and groundskeeping workers at $18.82 an hour, before payroll taxes and workers' comp. Run that through the [labor burden calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/labor-burden-calculator) to see what a helper really costs.

## Your launch tech stack

Lawn care runs on routes and recurring billing. You need a phone that gets answered, a route list for each day, a way to bill every client monthly or per visit, and books that track fuel and repairs. Paper and a cell phone work for 15 lawns. At 40, you're rescheduling rain days by text at 9 p.m.

**Options for running a lawn care office**

| Option | Fits | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cell phone, spreadsheet route list | Your first season | Rain-day reshuffles, unpaid invoices, missed calls on the mower |
| Lawn and field service software (Jobber, Housecall Pro, others) | Routes, recurring jobs and invoices | Calls still go to you; see [Jobber alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/jobber-alternatives) |
| BRIX | Calls answered and invoices sent while you mow | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX answers your business line while the mower is running, books estimate visits and texts back callers who hang up. It sends invoices with a pay link after each visit and keeps your books synced to QuickBooks.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Invoicing and payments](https://www.brix.so/features/invoicing-payments): Turns finished jobs into invoices and politely chases unpaid ones until the money is in your account.
- [QuickBooks sync](https://www.brix.so/integrations/quickbooks): Syncs customers, invoices and payments with QuickBooks so the books match the jobs.

Landscaping companies use the same setup; see [the AI receptionist for landscapers](https://www.brix.so/for/landscaping/ai-receptionist).

## How much can a lawn care business make?

Multiply lawns per day by days per week by your average visit, then by the weeks in your season, and subtract fuel, repairs, insurance and taxes. That's the honest version. No public source reliably reports first-year lawn care income, so be skeptical of six-figure claims. The [break-even calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/break-even-calculator) tells you how many lawns a month you need before you earn anything.

> **Levers that change lawn care profit**
>
> **Lawns per hour of driving.** Density beats price.
>
> **Add-ons.** Cleanups, aeration and leaf removal sold to existing clients.
>
> **Chemical services.** Higher value per visit, but only after you're licensed.
>
> **Off-season.** Snow or holiday lighting smooth out winter cash flow.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to start a lawn care business?

In our illustrative example, about $6,647 with a commercial push mower, trimmer and blower and a vehicle you already own, including three months of fixed costs. With a zero-turn mower, trailer and used truck it's about $33,647. Use the calculator with your own quotes.

### Do I need a license to mow lawns?

Usually only a business license and state registration. A pesticide applicator license is needed when you apply weed or insect control for hire, and some states, like Florida, also certify commercial fertilizer applicators. San Mateo County, California, for example, says mowing-only services don't need a pesticide license.

### Do I need a license to spray weed killer or fertilize lawns?

Spraying weed killer for hire usually requires a state commercial applicator license. Texas requires a TDA license for any pesticide applied for hire to lawns but exempts fertilizer-only work. Illinois says fertilizer alone needs no license, while Florida requires certification to apply commercial fertilizer to urban landscapes.

### How much is insurance for a lawn care business?

Insureon reports median premiums of $57 a month for general liability and $42 a month for tools and equipment coverage for lawn care businesses, updated Sept. 28, 2026. Workers' comp runs a median $123 a month once you hire, and commercial auto $255 a month.

### What equipment do I need to start mowing lawns?

A commercial push or zero-turn mower, a string trimmer, an edger, a backpack blower, hand tools, gas cans and hearing protection. A trailer comes with a riding mower. Toro lists its Z Master 2000 52-inch zero-turn at $11,599, so many owners start with a push mower and upgrade.

### How much should I charge to mow a lawn?

LawnStarter reports $44–$71 per visit with a $57 average, and Housecall Pro puts mow, trim and blow at $50–$80. Price by lot size, add a minimum charge, and time each lawn so your real hourly rate covers fuel, equipment wear and taxes.

### Is a lawn care business profitable?

It can be when routes are dense and clients are recurring. Profit comes from lawns per hour, add-on services and keeping equipment running. There's no reliable public first-year income figure, so model your own season with the calculators on this page.
