# How to Start a Painting Business in 2026 (Costs, Licenses and First Customers)

To start a painting business, check your state's contractor license rules, get EPA Lead-Safe certified if you'll work on homes built before 1978, insure your liability and tools, and buy a sprayer, ladders and prep gear. Using a vehicle you own, our example start costs about $7,219.

## Key takeaways

- Our illustrative start is about $7,219 with a basic kit and a vehicle you own, or about $28,719 with pro spray gear, scaffolding and a used van.
- Any firm paid to disturb paint in a pre-1978 home needs EPA Lead-Safe certification: $300 for five years, plus an 8-hour renovator course.
- California requires a C-33 painting license on jobs of $1,000 or more; Oregon and Washington require painters to be licensed or registered with a bond.
- Insureon's painting customers pay a median $72 a month for general liability and $190 a month for workers' comp.
- Paint jobs are big tickets. NerdWallet puts the average interior job around $2,000 and an exterior job just over $3,100.

## How much does it cost to start a painting business?

Painting has one of the lowest equipment bills in the trades, and customers usually pay for materials. A solo painter with a basic sprayer, ladders, prep gear, lead-safe certification and a vehicle already owned needs about **$7,219** in our example, three months of fixed costs included. Go to pro spray equipment, scaffolding and a used van and it's about **$28,719**. Insurance and the average job are cited; the rest are illustrative.

**Painting business startup costs, line by line**

| Line item | Example amount | Source or basis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tools and equipment | $2,500 basic / $9,000 pro | Illustrative. Includes a HEPA vacuum for lead-safe work |
| Vehicle | $0 if you own one / $15,000 used van | Illustrative. Ladder racks matter more than size |
| Licenses and certification | $600 | Illustrative. Includes EPA's $300 RRP firm fee and a renovator course |
| Launch marketing | $600 | Illustrative. Yard signs, a portfolio site, door hangers |
| Insurance and bond | $123/mo | [Insureon](https://www.insureon.com/construction-contracting-business-insurance/painters/cost): GL $72 + tools $42 + bond $9 |
| Phone and software | $100/mo | Illustrative |
| Vehicle running costs | $350/mo | Illustrative |
| Consumables | $300/mo | Illustrative. Tape, plastic, roller covers, tips, caulk; paint is billed per job |
| Ongoing marketing | $300/mo | Illustrative |

_Example: $3,700 up front and $1,173 a month; three months of reserve is $3,519, for $7,219. Insurance verified 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a solo painter in his own pickup**
>
> Up front: $2,500 of sprayer, ladders, drop cloths and a HEPA vac, $600 for registration and lead-safe certification, $600 of signs and a website: **$3,700**.
>
> Monthly: $123 insurance and bond, $100 phone and software, $350 vehicle, $300 consumables, $300 marketing: **$1,173**.
>
> Three months of reserve ($3,519) makes **$7,219**. At NerdWallet's $2,000 average interior job, 1 job a month covers fixed costs on paper, but paint, labor and drive time come out of that price first.

## Do you need a license to start a painting business?

It depends on your state, but there's one federal rule nearly every residential painter runs into: **EPA's lead-safe certification for homes built before 1978**. On top of that, some states license or register painting contractors.

### EPA Lead-Safe (RRP) certification

Under EPA's [Renovation, Repair and Painting rule](https://www.epa.gov/lead/renovation-repair-and-painting-program), anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes, child-care facilities or preschools built before 1978 must be certified, sole proprietors included. That covers sanding, scraping and most prep on older homes. It takes two pieces:

**What lead-safe certification involves**

| Requirement | Detail | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Firm certification | $300 initial or renewal; valid 5 years; apply online, about 1–2 weeks to process; renew at least 90 days before expiry | [EPA firm certification](https://www.epa.gov/lead/renovation-repair-and-painting-program-firm-certification) |
| Certified renovator | 8-hour initial course (2 hours hands-on); 4-hour refresher; 5 years with a hands-on refresher, 3 years with an online refresher | [EPA renovator training](https://www.epa.gov/lead/renovation-repair-and-painting-program-renovator-training) |
| Pamphlet before work | Give the lead pamphlet no more than 60 days before work starts and get written acknowledgment | [40 CFR 745.84](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/40/745.84) |
| Minor work exemption | 6 sq ft or less of painted surface per room inside, 20 sq ft or less outside; not for window replacement or demolition | [40 CFR 745.83](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/40/745.83) |

_Some states run their own RRP programs instead of EPA, including Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Wisconsin. Certify with your state in those. Checked 2026-10-24._

Jobs in the same room within 30 days count as one job for the minor-work test, so you can't split a repaint into small pieces to avoid the rule. Budget for plastic sheeting, a HEPA vacuum and cleaning verification on every pre-1978 interior.

### State contractor licensing for painters

**Examples of state painter licensing**

| State | Requirement | Key numbers | Official source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| California | C-33 Painting and Decorating license | Required on jobs of $1,000+ (or any that need a permit or a hired worker); $450 application, $200 initial license for a sole owner | [CSLB C-33](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/about_us/library/licensing_classifications/Licensing_Classifications_Detail.aspx?Class=C33), [fees](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/about_us/library/fees.aspx) |
| Oregon | CCB license (painting is listed as work requiring one) | 16 hours of pre-license training and an exam ($60, 70% to pass); $400 two-year license; residential bond; a separate $50 lead-based paint license | [Oregon CCB](https://www.oregon.gov/ccb/pages/ccb%20license.aspx) |
| Washington | Specialty contractor registration (painting is one of 63 specialties) | $15,000 specialty bond; $150.20 registration; liability insurance of $200,000 public liability plus $50,000 property damage, or $250,000 combined | [WA L&I](https://www.lni.wa.gov/licensing-permits/contractors/register-as-a-contractor/) |

_Checked 2026-10-24. Many other states require only a local business license for painting. Search your state contractor board before bidding._

California's [AB 2622](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/IndustryBulletins/2024/AB%202622%20Implementation.FINAL.pdf) raised the unlicensed small-job limit to $1,000 starting Jan. 1, 2025, but a license is required at any size if the job needs a permit or you hire help. A two-bedroom repaint passes $1,000 fast. See [contractor licenses](https://www.brix.so/learn/contractor-license) for how licensing works generally.

### Ladders, fall protection, respirators and VOC rules

- **Fall protection.** OSHA's construction rule ([29 CFR 1926.501](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/1926.501)) requires guardrails, nets or personal fall arrest for employees on an unprotected edge 6 feet or more above a lower level.
- **Ladders.** Under [29 CFR 1926.1053](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/1926.1053), side rails must extend at least 3 feet above the landing, and an extension ladder's base sits about one-quarter of its working length out from the wall.
- **Respirators.** If employees spray with respirators, [29 CFR 1910.134](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/29/1910.134) requires a written program, a medical evaluation and a fit test before first use and at least yearly.
- **VOC limits.** Some air districts cap solvent content. South Coast AQMD's [Rule 1113 table](https://www.aqmd.gov/home/rules-compliance/compliance/vocs/architectural-coatings/tos) lists 50 g/L for flat and nonflat coatings and 100 g/L for primers and sealers. Buy compliant products locally and your supplier will usually flag the rest.

## What insurance does a painting business need?

Paint drips, overspray on a neighbor's car and ladder falls are the common claims. General liability comes first; tools and equipment coverage protects sprayers that ride in the truck.

**Median insurance premiums for painting businesses**

| Policy | Per month | Per year | When you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $72 | $862 | Before the first job |
| Tools and equipment | $42 | $505 | Sprayers and ladders; items over $2,500 may need scheduling |
| Surety bond | $9 | $112 | Where your state license requires one |
| Business owner's policy | $109 | $1,313 | If you have a shop or storage |
| Workers' compensation | $190 | $2,279 | Your first employee; ladder work drives the rate |
| Commercial auto | $295 | $3,539 | Van titled to the business or crew driving |
| Commercial umbrella | $79 | $947 | Commercial and HOA contracts |

## What equipment do you need to start painting?

Prep is most of the job, so buy prep tools as carefully as the sprayer. A clean cut line and a dust-free sanded surface are what customers remember.

**Painting equipment starter list**

| Item | Price anchor | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Airless sprayer | Entry contractor models run several hundred dollars; pro units over $1,000 | Exteriors, ceilings, new construction and cabinets |
| HEPA dust extractor | Festool CT 15 E HEPA: $449 | [Tools for Working Wood](https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/FS-CT15.XX). Lead-safe sanding and cleanup |
| Ladders | Illustrative | A 28 ft extension, a 6 ft and an 8 ft step, plus a plank |
| Canvas drop cloths | About $28–$34 for a 9x12 | Buy several; plastic for RRP containment is separate |
| Brushes, rollers, poles, trays, tape, caulk, putty knives | Illustrative | Restock monthly |
| Respirator, eye protection, gloves | Illustrative | Required for spraying solvent products |

## How to price your first painting jobs

Price from labor hours plus materials, then check the result against per-room and per-square-foot ranges. Walls, ceilings, trim and doors are separate line items, and so is prep. A room with peeling paint and patching takes twice the hours of a clean repaint.

**What customers pay for painting**

| Measure | Range | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Average interior job | About $2,000 | NerdWallet |
| Average exterior job | Just over $3,100 | NerdWallet |
| Interior walls, per sq ft of wall | $1.50–$3.00 | Inch Calculator (Oct. 2023) |
| Per room | $955–$3,000 | Inch Calculator (Oct. 2023) |
| Painter labor | $20–$50 per hour | Inch Calculator (Oct. 2023) |

_Sources: NerdWallet, cost to paint a house in 2026; Inch Calculator, room painting cost guide (updated Oct. 5, 2023, so older than the other figures on this page). Use them as a range check, not a price list._

Build each estimate with the [job pricing calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/job-pricing-calculator) and a written [estimate template](https://www.brix.so/templates/estimate-template). For room-by-room rates, see [how much to charge for interior painting](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/interior-painting) and [exterior painting](https://www.brix.so/how-much-to-charge/exterior-painting). On materials, a 25% markup is a 20% margin; read [markup vs. margin](https://www.brix.so/learn/markup-vs-margin) before you mark up paint.

## How do you get your first painting customers?

Painting is a trust sale: customers let you into their house for days. Photos of clean prep, clear written estimates and fast answers win the first jobs.

1. **Paint for people who know you.** Friends, family and neighbors at your normal price, in exchange for photos and an honest review.
2. **Build a Google Business Profile with before-and-after photos.** Show the masking and plastic too; it proves you protect the house. See [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile).
3. **Put a yard sign on every exterior.** An exterior job is a two-week billboard on the street.
4. **Call realtors and property managers.** Pre-listing touch-ups and turnover repaints repeat all year, including winter.
5. **Answer estimate requests the same day.** Homeowners request two or three estimates and often go with whoever shows up first. The [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) puts a number on slow callbacks.

### When to hire a painter

The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/painters-construction-and-maintenance.htm) reports a May 2025 median of $23.75 an hour ($49,400 a year) for construction and maintenance painters, with about 24,900 openings a year projected. Payroll taxes and workers' comp add to that; run the [labor burden calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/labor-burden-calculator) before you make an offer.

## Your launch tech stack

Painting runs on estimates: site visits, written quotes, follow-ups and deposits. The office side needs a phone that gets answered while you're on a ladder, a quote you can send the same day, and a way to collect deposits and final payments.

**Options for the office side**

| Option | Good for | Watch for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cell phone and document templates | Your first few jobs | Estimates that never get a follow-up; calls missed mid-coat |
| Field service software (Jobber, Housecall Pro, others) | Estimates, scheduling and invoices | Calls still need you; see [Jobber alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/jobber-alternatives) |
| BRIX | Calls answered and estimates followed up while you paint | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX answers your business line while you're on a ladder, books the estimate visit and texts back callers who hang up. It sends the estimate, follows up when the customer goes quiet, and collects the deposit and final payment by text.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Quotes and estimates](https://www.brix.so/features/quotes-estimates): Builds accurate quotes on site and follows up on every open estimate.
- [Invoicing and payments](https://www.brix.so/features/invoicing-payments): Turns finished jobs into invoices and politely chases unpaid ones until the money is in your account.

See the [AI receptionist for painters](https://www.brix.so/for/painting/ai-receptionist) for how it handles estimate requests.

## How much can a painting business make?

Gross profit per job is the price minus paint, sundries and labor; monthly profit is that across your jobs minus fixed costs. Exterior work is seasonal in most of the country, so the year depends on how well you fill winter with interiors and commercial repaints. There's no reliable public figure for first-year painting business income, so model your own with the [break-even calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/break-even-calculator).

> **What moves painting profit**
>
> **Estimate accuracy.** Track hours per room against your quote.
>
> **Close rate.** Faster estimates and follow-up win more of the jobs you bid.
>
> **Prep pricing.** Charge for repairs, caulking and lead-safe setup as their own lines.
>
> **Winter work.** Interiors, cabinets and commercial repaints keep the crew busy.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to start a painting business?

In our illustrative example, about $7,219 with a basic sprayer, ladders, prep gear, lead-safe certification and a vehicle you own, including three months of fixed costs. With pro spray gear, scaffolding and a used van it's about $28,719. Customers usually pay for paint through deposits.

### Do I need a license to be a painter?

It depends on the state. California requires a C-33 license on jobs of $1,000 or more, Oregon requires a CCB license, and Washington requires specialty contractor registration with a $15,000 bond. Many states require only a local business license, but almost every residential painter needs EPA lead-safe certification.

### What is EPA RRP certification and do painters need it?

It's EPA's lead-safe certification for work that disturbs paint in homes, child-care facilities and preschools built before 1978. Firms pay $300 for five years and need at least one certified renovator, who takes an 8-hour course. Minor jobs under 6 square feet per room inside or 20 square feet outside are exempt.

### How much is insurance for a painting business?

Insureon reports median premiums of $72 a month for general liability, $42 a month for tools and equipment and $190 a month for workers' comp for painting businesses, updated Aug. 3, 2026. Your quote depends on your state, payroll and the height of your work.

### What equipment do I need to start a painting business?

An airless sprayer, extension and step ladders, drop cloths, brushes, rollers and poles, masking supplies, a respirator and a HEPA vacuum for lead-safe work. Buy paint per job. A basic kit costs a couple of thousand dollars; scaffolding and pro sprayers come later.

### How do I price painting jobs?

Estimate labor hours by room or surface, add paint and sundries, then add overhead and profit. Check the result against market ranges: NerdWallet puts the average interior job around $2,000 and exterior just over $3,100. Price prep and repairs separately so customers see what they're paying for.

### Is a painting business profitable?

It can be, because equipment costs are low and customers fund materials through deposits. Profit depends on accurate estimates, your close rate and staying busy in winter. There's no reliable public first-year income figure, so model your own jobs per month and gross profit per job.
