# How to Start a Plumbing Business in 2026 (Costs, Licenses and First Customers)

To start a plumbing business, you usually need the license level your state or city requires to run a shop (often a master or contractor license), liability insurance at or above the board's minimum, and a stocked van. A licensed plumber with his own truck needs about $14,341 in our example.

## Key takeaways

- Startup cash is about $14,341 for a licensed plumber using his own truck, or about $53,341 with a full kit (camera, jetter, press tool) and a used van (illustrative, calculator below).
- The BLS says most states and some localities license plumbers, usually after 2 to 5 years of experience and an exam.
- In Texas, a plumbing company works under a Responsible Master Plumber, who must carry at least $300,000 of commercial liability insurance and can serve only one company.
- Some places license plumbers locally: a New York City master plumber license takes 7 years of experience in the last 10 and two exams ($585 written, $530 practical).
- Insureon's plumbing customers pay about $147 a month for general liability, one of the highest rates among the trades.

## How much does it cost to start a plumbing business?

Most plumbing shops start when a licensed plumber leaves an employer with his own hand tools and truck. In that case the cash goes to the gear an employer used to supply (a drain machine, a torch kit, test gauges), licensing, insurance and a reserve. Our example comes to **$14,341**. Add a sewer camera, a small jetter, a press tool and a used van, and it's about **$53,341**. Insurance (Insureon) and the service-call fee (Housecall Pro) are cited; everything else is illustrative.

_Example totals: $8,500 one-time plus $1,947 a month. Three months of fixed costs in reserve adds $5,841, for $14,341 in startup cash. Insurance figures checked 2026-10-24._

> **Worked example: a master plumber going out on his own**
>
> He owns his hand tools and a pickup. He buys $6,000 of machines and stock, pays $1,000 in license, registration and permit fees, and spends $1,500 on lettering and a site: **$8,500** up front.
>
> Each month: $197 insurance and bond, $150 phone and software, $700 truck, $400 stock and $500 ads, or **$1,947 a month**.
>
> With three months held back ($5,841) he starts with **$14,341**. At a $150 service call fee, about 13 calls a month cover his fixed costs. One water heater swap covers several of those.

## What license do you need to start a plumbing business?

Plumbing is one of the most tightly licensed trades. The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/plumbers-pipefitters-and-steamfitters.htm) says most states and some localities require plumbers to be licensed, usually after 2 to 5 years of experience and an exam. The license that lets you **work** (journeyman) is often not the one that lets you **run a company**. Running a shop usually takes a master license, a contractor registration, or both, plus insurance. Who issues it differs: some states license statewide, and in others the city or county does.

**Four places, four systems (from the official source)**

| Where | Who licenses | What a shop owner needs | Official source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Texas | State Board of Plumbing Examiners (statewide) | A Master Plumber designated as Responsible Master Plumber (RMP) with at least $300,000 commercial liability insurance; $225 fee; one company per RMP; vans show the company name and RMP license number | [TSBPE RMP](https://tsbpe.texas.gov/license-types/responsible-master-plumber/) |
| Texas (tiers) | TSBPE | Apprentice registration, then Tradesman-Limited, Journeyman, Master; 6 hours of continuing education to renew each year | [TSBPE license types](https://tsbpe.texas.gov/license-types/) |
| Illinois | Department of Public Health (statewide) | Licensed plumber: 4 years as a licensed apprentice, an approved course and the state exam. Contractors register yearly with liability and workers' comp insurance | [IDPH plumbing](https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/environmental-health-protection/plumbing.html) |
| New York City | NYC Department of Buildings (local) | Master plumber: 18+, 7 years of experience in the last 10, written exam ($585) and practical exam ($530); business needs general liability, workers' comp and disability insurance | [NYC DOB](https://www.nyc.gov/site/buildings/industry/obtain-a-master-plumber-license.page) |
| California | CSLB (C-36 plumbing contractor) | Four years of journey-level experience in the last ten, exams, and a $25,000 bond | [CSLB](https://www.cslb.ca.gov/contractors/applicants/contractors_license/exam_application/before_applying_for_license.aspx) |

_Last verified against each official page on 2026-10-24. Outside New York City, much of New York State licenses plumbers town by town. State-by-state pages are coming, starting with [Texas plumbing licensing](https://www.brix.so/licensing/plumbing/texas) and [Illinois](https://www.brix.so/licensing/plumbing/illinois)._

Illinois shows how small the pool is: the [IDPH](https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/environmental-health-protection/plumbing.html) licenses about 8,900 plumbers and 2,000 apprentices statewide. Apprentices there must be at least 16 and sponsored by a licensed plumber or an approved program. Wherever you are, the license on file is what lets you pull permits. No permit means no inspection, and that is where insurance claims on water damage get denied.

> **Not legal advice**
>
> Plumbing licensing is state and often local. Requirements, fees and insurance minimums change. Confirm with your state board or city buildings department before you advertise or bid.

## What insurance does a plumbing business need?

Plumbers pay more for liability than most trades, because one bad joint can flood a finished basement. Buy general liability at least at your board's minimum (Texas RMPs need $300,000), then add tools coverage, a commercial auto policy if the van is in the business's name, and workers' comp before your first apprentice.

**What plumbing businesses pay for insurance**

| Coverage | Per month | Per year | When you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| General liability | $147 | $1,768 | Before the first job; at or above your license minimum |
| Business owner's policy | $213 | $2,559 | If you have a shop or warehouse to insure too |
| Tools and equipment | $42 | $505 | As soon as the van carries your machines |
| Workers' compensation | $179 | $2,150 | When you hire |
| Commercial auto | $285 | $3,415 | Vans titled to the business |
| Professional liability | $67 | $808 | If you design systems or give written assessments |
| Commercial umbrella | $93 | $1,111 | When commercial customers ask for higher limits |
| Surety bond | $8 | $100 | Where your license or city requires one |

For structure, an LLC limits personal liability for business debts in most cases, while a sole proprietor is personally exposed; the SBA's business structure guide covers the trade-offs. Get a free EIN from the IRS, and see [S corp vs. LLC for contractors](https://www.brix.so/learn/s-corp-vs-llc-for-contractors) once you have steady profit. Still choosing a name? Try the [plumbing business name generator](https://www.brix.so/generators/business-name/plumbing).

## From journeyman to owner

The [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/construction-and-extraction/plumbers-pipefitters-and-steamfitters.htm) puts the median plumber, pipefitter and steamfitter wage at $63,800 (May 2025), across 510,600 jobs, with 7% growth projected for 2025–35. Your shop has to pay you more than that after costs, or it's a harder job for the same money. Four things to sort out before you hand in notice:

- **The license level.** If your state requires a master license to run a company, find out how many hours and years you still need and get them documented now.
- **Service vs. new construction.** Service and repair pays faster and needs a phone that's answered. New construction pays slower and needs cash flow to float materials.
- **Your non-compete.** Read what you signed about soliciting your employer's customers.
- **Your pricing.** You've seen what the shop charges. Now work out what it costs you per hour to run the van. Our [plumber career guide](https://www.brix.so/careers/how-to-become-a-plumber) covers the license ladder.

## What tools does a new plumbing business need?

Carry what finishes the common calls on the first visit: drains, toilets, faucets, water heaters and leaks.

- **Drain gear.** A drum machine for 1½–3 inch lines, hand augers and a closet auger. A sectional machine or jetter for main lines comes later.
- **Joining.** Torch and solder kit, PEX crimp or expansion tool, and a press tool once the volume pays for it.
- **Cutting and threading.** Pipe cutters, reciprocating saw, pipe wrenches; a threader if your area still has galvanized and black pipe.
- **Testing.** Pressure test gauges, a gas leak detector if you're licensed for gas, and a moisture meter for leak calls.
- **Seeing.** A sewer camera and locator turn a guess into a quote with video, and the inspection itself is billable.
- **Truck stock.** Wax rings, supply lines, flappers, fill valves, cartridges for the faucet brands in your area, fittings and a spare water heater if you can carry one.

### Plumbing business launch checklist

## How should a new plumbing business price jobs?

Charge a service call fee, quote common jobs at a flat price before you start, and price emergencies as emergencies. Many plumbing customers call in a panic, and a clear flat price is what earns their trust. Time-and-materials still fits hidden leaks, slab work and old systems where you can't see the job.

**What customers typically pay for plumbing**

| Service | Typical range | Pricing unit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Service call fee | $50–$250 | Per visit; travel and diagnosis |
| Labor | $75–$150 | Per hour, residential; up to $45–$200 by market |
| Emergency dispatch | $150–$400 | Per call; after-hours work at 1.5–3× standard rates |
| Drain clearing | $100–$275 | Per drain |
| Toilet repair | $100–$300 | Per toilet |
| Faucet or fixture install | $150–$600 | Per fixture |
| Water heater, tank | $900–$3,000 | Installed; tankless $1,400–$5,600 |
| Sewer line repair | $1,900–$3,700 | Per repair |

## How do you get plumbing customers when you're new?

Plumbing calls are urgent and local. The homeowner with water on the floor calls whoever answers first and can be there soonest. A new shop wins by being reachable, close and clear on price.

1. **Claim your Google profile.** Set a tight service area, list emergency hours only if you'll answer them, and add van and job photos. See [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile).
2. **Get referral partners.** Home inspectors, realtors, property managers and remodelers all need a plumber who returns calls. One property manager can fill a week.
3. **Answer every call, day or night.** Use a [plumbing call script](https://www.brix.so/templates/plumbing-call-script) so every caller gets the same questions. The [missed call calculator](https://www.brix.so/tools/missed-call-calculator) shows what a missed emergency call costs.
4. **Ask for the review on site.** Text a review link before you pull out of the driveway. Use our [review request templates](https://www.brix.so/templates/google-review-request-templates).
5. **Follow up on big quotes.** Repipes, sewer lines and water heater upgrades often need a second touch. See [estimate follow-up templates](https://www.brix.so/templates/estimate-follow-up-templates).

Paid lead sources and Google Local Services Ads can work for plumbing because the jobs are big, but track cost per booked job, not per lead. More channels are in [how to get more plumbing customers](https://www.brix.so/for/plumbing/sales).

## Your launch tech stack

A one-van plumbing shop loses the most money in two places: emergency calls that go to voicemail, and parts that never make it onto the invoice. Before the first job, set up a business line that's covered at night, a calendar, a flat-rate price list on your phone, card payments on site and books that tie parts to jobs.

**Running the office of a new plumbing shop**

| Option | Fits when | Watch for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cell phone, carbon-copy invoices, a spreadsheet | Your first few weeks | Night calls missed; parts forgotten on tickets; books done at tax time |
| Field service app (Housecall Pro, Jobber, ServiceTitan) | You want a price book, dispatch and invoices in one place | Someone still has to answer the phone. See [Housecall Pro alternatives](https://www.brix.so/compare/housecall-pro-alternatives) |
| BRIX | You want calls answered at 2 a.m. and books kept without a bookkeeper | Pricing isn't public yet; book a call to see if it fits |

BRIX answers your line while you're under a sink or asleep, books the emergency and texts back anyone who hangs up. It sends the estimate and invoice, takes payment by text and keeps the books synced to QuickBooks.

- [AI receptionist](https://www.brix.so/features/ai-receptionist): Answers every call 24/7, qualifies the caller, books the job and texts back anyone it misses.
- [Missed-call text back](https://www.brix.so/features/missed-call-text-back): Texts a caller back within seconds when a call is missed, so the lead stays with you.
- [Invoicing and payments](https://www.brix.so/features/invoicing-payments): Turns finished jobs into invoices and politely chases unpaid ones until the money is in your account.
- [QuickBooks sync](https://www.brix.so/integrations/quickbooks): Syncs customers, invoices and payments with QuickBooks so the books match the jobs.

## Is a plumbing business profitable?

It can be, because licensing limits competition and emergencies support premium pricing. There's no trustworthy public figure for first-year owner income, so build your own: calls per week, average ticket, parts margin and how many big jobs (water heaters, sewer lines, repipes) you close each month, against the fixed costs above and the wage you're giving up.

> **What moves plumbing profit most**
>
> **Average ticket.** Camera inspections and options on the first visit lift it more than raising the hourly rate.
>
> **After-hours answer rate.** Emergency calls carry the highest prices of the week.
>
> **Parts on every ticket.** Forgotten fittings add up across a year.
>
> **Permits pulled.** Inspected work protects you when a claim comes in.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to start a plumbing business?

In our illustrative example, a licensed plumber with his own truck needs about $14,341: $8,500 up front plus three months of $1,947 in fixed costs. With a sewer camera, jetter, press tool and a used van it's about $53,341. Use the calculator with your own quotes.

### Do you need a master plumber license to start a plumbing business?

In many places, yes, or a contractor registration that requires one. In Texas, a plumbing company works under a Responsible Master Plumber with at least $300,000 of liability insurance. Rules differ by state and city, so check your state board or local buildings department.

### How long does it take to become a licensed plumber?

The BLS says licensing usually takes 2 to 5 years of experience plus an exam. Illinois requires 4 years as a licensed apprentice and an approved course; a New York City master plumber license takes 7 years of experience in the last 10.

### How much is insurance for a plumbing business?

Insureon reports plumbers pay about $147 a month ($1,768 a year) for general liability, $179 a month for workers' comp once they hire, and $285 a month for commercial auto. Tools coverage runs about $42 a month. Your license may set the minimum limits.

### What should a new plumber charge for a service call?

Housecall Pro's 2026 guide puts plumbing service call fees at $50–$250 and residential labor at $75–$150 an hour, with emergency dispatch at $150–$400. Set yours from your costs, then quote common jobs at flat prices.

### Is starting a plumbing business worth it?

For many licensed plumbers it is, because licensing limits competition and emergency work pays well. The BLS median wage is $63,800 (May 2025), so your shop needs to beat that after costs. Model your calls, average ticket and fixed costs before you leave your job.

### How do plumbers get customers fast?

Set up a Google Business Profile with a tight service area, build referral partners like property managers and home inspectors, and answer every call, especially at night. Emergency callers book whoever picks up first.
