# Google Review Request Templates (Text, Email and In Person)

Google review request templates are short, ready-to-send messages that ask a customer to leave a review on your Google Business Profile, with your direct review link. The best ones are personal, sent right after the job, and go to every customer, because Google's policy prohibits selectively asking only happy customers or offering anything in exchange.

## Key takeaways

- Copy the text, email, in-person and QR card templates below, or download them as a .txt file.
- Send the same request to every customer after every job. Google prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews, and the FTC warns against it too.
- Never offer a discount, gift or entry into a drawing for a review. Google prohibits review incentives.
- Get your direct review link from your Business Profile so the customer lands right on the review form.

> **Ask everyone, offer nothing**
>
> Google's Maps user-generated content policy says businesses must not "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers," and must not offer incentives for reviews. That rules out "review gating" (asking customers if they're happy first and sending only the happy ones to Google) and "$10 off for a 5-star review." Reviews obtained that way can be removed.

## The free Google review request templates

Replace the brackets with your details and paste in your review link. None of these templates ask for a 5-star review or filter customers; they ask for honest feedback from everyone, which is what Google allows.

### Google review request templates

**1. Text message, same day as the job**

Hi [First name], thanks for choosing [Company] today. If you have a minute, we'd really appreciate an honest review on Google. It helps neighbors find a [trade] they can trust: [review link]. Thanks! – [Tech or owner name]. Reply STOP to opt out.

**2. Shorter text**

Thanks again for having us out, [First name]! Would you share your experience with [Company] on Google? [review link] – [Name]. Reply STOP to opt out.

**3. Email**

Subject: How did we do, [First name]?
Hi [First name],
Thanks for trusting [Company] with your [job] on [date]. [Tech name] mentioned [one personal detail, e.g. it was great to meet your dog, Bella].
Would you take a minute to share your experience on Google? Honest feedback, good or bad, helps us improve and helps other homeowners decide.
Leave a review: [review link]
If anything about the job isn't right, reply to this email or call me at [phone] and I'll make it right.
Thanks,
[Owner name], [Company]

**4. One reminder, 3–5 days later (send only if no review yet)**

Hi [First name], [Name] from [Company] again. If you haven't had a chance, we'd love your honest feedback on Google: [review link]. Either way, thanks for your business! Reply STOP to opt out.

**5. In person, at the end of the job (tech script)**

"We're a local company and reviews make a big difference for us. Would you be willing to leave an honest review on Google about today? I'll text you the link so it only takes a minute."
(Then send template 1. Don't ask them to review while you stand there, and don't ask for a specific star rating.)

**6. Leave-behind card or invoice footer (with QR code)**

"How did we do? Scan to leave an honest review on Google. Thank you for supporting a local business!" [QR code]

## How do you get your Google review link?

1. **Open your Business Profile** Search for your business on Google while signed in to the account that manages the profile, or open Google Business Profile.
2. **Find the review link** Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews. Google shows a short link and a QR code.
3. **Copy the link or save the QR code** Copy the link for texts and emails. Google says review QR codes can only be generated in a computer browser, not on mobile; right-click to save the image.
4. **Test it** Open the link on your phone. It should go straight to the review form. Customers need to be signed in to a Google Account to post.

## What makes a review request work, and stay within the rules?

A review request works when it's personal, sent within hours of the job, short enough to read in five seconds, and has a link that opens the review form in one tap. It stays within Google's rules when every customer gets the same request, no incentive is offered, and you never ask for a specific rating.

**Do this, not that**

| Do | Don't | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Send the request to every customer after every job | Ask only customers who seem happy, or screen with a "rate us 1–5" first step | Google prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews; the FTC also says don't ask only customers you expect to be positive |
| Ask for honest feedback | Ask for "5 stars" | Asking for a specific rating is an attempt to influence the content |
| Thank them, with no strings | Offer discounts, gift cards or drawings for reviews | Google strictly prohibits review incentives |
| Send within a few hours | Wait until the invoice is overdue | The experience is fresh the same day |
| Give an easy way to raise problems with you directly | Discourage or block negative reviews | Offering to fix problems is fine; steering people away from reviewing isn't |
| Reply to every review, good or bad | Argue in public replies | Replies show future customers how you handle problems |

> **Texting consent applies to review requests too**
>
> The FCC says autodialed texts to cell phones need prior consent and commercial texts need written consent. A review request can read as marketing, so collect written text consent at booking (for example, a checkbox on your booking or estimate form), identify your business and honor STOP replies. This is general information, not legal advice.

## Filled example: garage door spring replacement

A garage door tech replaces a broken torsion spring at 10 am. Before leaving, he uses the in-person line, and the office sends the text at noon. Five days later there's no review, so one reminder goes out. Then the sequence stops.

**The review request, start to finish**

**Tech, in person:** We're a local shop and reviews really help us. Would you be willing to leave an honest review on Google about today? I'll text you the link.

**Customer:** Sure.

**Company, 12:00:** Hi Linda, thanks for choosing Northside Garage Doors today. If you have a minute, we'd appreciate an honest review on Google. It helps neighbors find a garage door company they can trust: [link]. Thanks! – Chris. Reply STOP to opt out.

**Company, day 5:** Hi Linda, Chris from Northside again. If you haven't had a chance, we'd love your honest feedback on Google: [link]. Either way, thanks for your business! Reply STOP to opt out.

> **Illustrative example**
>
> The business and names are made up. Linda got the same messages every other customer that week got, whether her job went perfectly or not.

## How should review requests differ by trade?

**Timing and wording by trade**

| Trade | When to send | Personal detail to mention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| HVAC | Same day; for installs, after the first day of comfort | "Hope the house is cooling down nicely" |
| Plumbing | Same day, after the water's back on | The problem solved: "glad you have hot water again" |
| Electrical | After the final inspection passes on permitted jobs | "Enjoy the new EV charger" |
| Roofing | After final cleanup and walkthrough, not mid-job | The crew lead's name |
| Landscaping | After an install; for recurring service, once a season | "The new patio looks great" |
| Cleaning | After the first clean and periodically for regulars | The cleaner's name |
| Pest control | After the follow-up visit confirms the problem is handled | "Glad the ants are gone" |

## Common review request mistakes

- **Review gating.** A "Were you happy? Yes goes to Google, No goes to a private form" funnel is selective solicitation. Send everyone to the same place.
- **Incentives.** Discounts, gift cards and contest entries for reviews violate Google's policy, even if you don't ask for positive ones.
- **Asking for 5 stars.** Ask for honest feedback instead.
- **Sending a link to your website instead of the review form.** Every extra tap loses reviewers. Use Google's direct link.
- **Too many reminders.** One reminder is plenty. More turns gratitude into annoyance.
- **Never replying.** Answer every review. See [how to ask for Google reviews](https://www.brix.so/learn/how-to-ask-for-google-reviews) and [Google Business Profile](https://www.brix.so/learn/google-business-profile) for the bigger picture.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should I text a customer to ask for a Google review?

Something short and personal with your direct link: "Hi Linda, thanks for choosing Northside today. If you have a minute, we'd appreciate an honest review on Google: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out." Send it the same day as the job.

### Is it against Google's rules to ask for reviews?

No. Google allows businesses to ask customers for reviews. Its policy prohibits offering incentives for reviews, discouraging negative reviews, and selectively asking only customers likely to leave positive ones.

### What is review gating?

Review gating means screening customers first, for example asking for a rating, and only sending satisfied customers to Google while routing unhappy ones to a private form. It's selective solicitation, which Google's policy prohibits. Send every customer the same review request.

### Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google strictly prohibits offering incentives such as discounts, free services or gifts in exchange for reviews, even if you don't ask for a positive one. Thank customers without strings attached.

### How do I get a direct link to my Google review form?

In your Google Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews. Copy the link, or save the QR code from a computer browser. Test it on your phone to make sure it opens the review form.

### How many times should I ask a customer for a review?

Ask once in person or by text on the day of the job, then send at most one reminder a few days later. If they don't leave one, let it go. More reminders annoy customers.

### Do I need consent to text customers for reviews?

For automated texts, yes. The FCC says autodialed texts to cell phones need prior consent and commercial texts need written consent. Collect text consent at booking, identify your business in the message and honor STOP replies.
