# Drywall Calculator

To estimate drywall, add the wall area (perimeter × height, minus openings) and the ceiling area, add 10–15% waste, and divide by the sheet size (32 sq ft for a 4 × 8). A 14 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling needs 19 sheets of 4 × 8.

## Key takeaways

- Board area = 2 × (length + width) × height − openings + ceiling (length × width).
- Sheets = board area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area. 4 × 8 = 32 sq ft, 4 × 10 = 40, 4 × 12 = 48.
- USG lists about 370 ft of joint tape per 1,000 sq ft of board.
- USG says about two 4.5 gal pails of ready-mixed all-purpose compound finish 1,000 sq ft.
- Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints, which are the hardest seams to finish flat.

## How do you calculate how much drywall you need?

Measure the square footage of every surface you're hanging, subtract large openings, add a waste allowance, and divide by the area of one sheet. Round up to whole sheets. Then estimate tape and joint compound from the board area.

**Formula**

```
Sheets = (2 × (L + W) × H − openings + L × W) × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area
```

Where:
- L, W, H = room length, width and wall height in feet
- openings = doors (3 × 7 ft = 21 sq ft) and windows (3 × 5 ft = 15 sq ft)
- L × W = the ceiling; leave it out if you're only hanging walls
- waste = 0.10 for simple rooms, 0.15 for cut-up rooms
- sheet area = 32 (4 × 8), 40 (4 × 10) or 48 (4 × 12) sq ft

1. **Measure walls.** Add up the length of every wall and multiply by the wall height. Measure each room separately.
2. **Subtract big openings.** Take off doors, windows and pass-throughs. Many hangers don't deduct small windows, since the cutout is waste anyway.
3. **Add ceilings.** Length × width for each ceiling. Hang ceilings first so wall sheets support the edges.
4. **Add waste and divide.** Multiply by 1.10–1.15 and divide by the sheet area. Round up.
5. **Estimate finishing materials.** Use the board area (before waste): about 370 ft of tape and about 9 gallons of ready-mixed compound per 1,000 sq ft, per USG.

> **Worked example: a bedroom**
>
> A 14 × 12 ft bedroom with 8 ft walls, 1 door and 2 windows. Walls: 2 × (14 + 12) × 8 = 416, less 51 sq ft of openings = **365 sq ft**. Ceiling: **168 sq ft**.
>
> Total board area: 533 sq ft. With 10% waste: 586.3 sq ft ÷ 32 = **19 sheets of 4 × 8**, or 13 sheets of 4 × 12.
>
> Finishing: 533 ÷ 1,000 × 370 ≈ **197 ft of tape** (one 250 ft roll), and 4.8 gallons of compound, or **2 pails**.

## 4 × 8 or 4 × 12 sheets?

USG makes standard panels 4 ft wide in lengths from 8 to 16 ft. Longer sheets cover a wall with fewer butt joints (the factory-tapered long edges are easy to finish; the square-cut ends are not), so pros hang the longest sheet they can carry into the room and lift. 4 × 8 sheets win in tight stairwells, small rooms and for one-person ceiling work.

**Drywall sheets by room (walls + ceiling, 10% waste)**

| Room | Size | Board area (sq ft) | 4 × 8 sheets | 4 × 12 sheets |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Half bath | 5 × 8 ft, 8 ft walls | 227 | 8 | 6 |
| Small bedroom | 10 × 10 ft, 8 ft walls | 384 | 14 | 9 |
| Bedroom | 14 × 12 ft, 8 ft walls | 533 | 19 | 13 |
| Living room | 16 × 20 ft, 9 ft walls | 881 | 31 | 21 |
| Basement rec room | 20 × 30 ft, 8 ft walls | 1,328 | 46 | 31 |

_Computed with the calculator above. Doors deducted at 21 sq ft and windows at 15 sq ft._

## How much tape, mud and screws for drywall?

**Finishing materials per 1,000 sq ft of board**

| Material | Amount per 1,000 sq ft | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paper or mesh joint tape | about 370 ft | USG joint tape product data |
| Ready-mixed all-purpose joint compound | about 9 gal (two 4.5 gal pails) | USG FAQ |
| Screw spacing, walls | 16 in on center | USG (non-fire-rated assemblies) |
| Screw spacing, ceilings | 12 in on center | USG (non-fire-rated assemblies) |

_Fire-rated assemblies follow the fastener schedule in the tested design, not these defaults._

## Common drywall estimating mistakes

1. **Skipping waste on cut-up rooms.** Soffits, closets, angled walls and lots of outlets turn 10% into 15% fast.
2. **Forgetting the ceiling or the closet.** Walk every space on the plan, including closets and the back side of knee walls.
3. **Ordering only 4 × 8.** If the crew can handle 12 ft sheets, fewer butt joints save finishing time.
4. **Mixing up board types.** Bathrooms, garages and fire separations may need moisture-resistant or Type X board. Price them on separate lines.
5. **Leaving out finishing labor.** Taping and three coats of mud often take longer than hanging. Quote hang and finish separately.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 12 room?

With 8 ft walls, one door and two windows, a 12 × 12 room needs about 17 sheets of 4 × 8 for walls and ceiling with 10% waste, or 12 for the walls alone.

### How many square feet is a sheet of drywall?

A 4 × 8 sheet is 32 sq ft, a 4 × 10 is 40 sq ft and a 4 × 12 is 48 sq ft. USG makes standard panels 4 ft wide (54 in for some) in lengths from 8 to 16 ft.

### How much waste should I add for drywall?

Add about 10% for simple rectangular rooms and 15% for rooms with soffits, angles, lots of openings or short wall sections. Using longer sheets can reduce waste and seams.

### How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?

USG says about two 4.5 gallon pails of ready-mixed all-purpose compound finish 1,000 sq ft of board, roughly 9 gallons. That works out to about 0.3 gallon per 4 × 8 sheet. Heavy texture or extra skim coats take more.

### How much drywall tape do I need?

USG lists about 370 ft of joint tape per 1,000 sq ft of board, or about 12 ft per 4 × 8 sheet. Add inside-corner runs if your rooms have a lot of corners.

### Do you subtract windows and doors when estimating drywall?

Subtract doors and large openings. Many hangers ignore small windows, because the sheet usually goes over the opening and gets cut out, so it's waste either way.
