Google Local Services Ads for HVAC: Cost, Setup and Ranking

By BRIX Editorial Team · Updated

Google Local Services Ads for HVAC are pay-per-lead ads at the top of Google for searches like "AC repair near me." You pay for each valid call, message or booking, not for clicks. HVAC is an urgent category, so Google runs extra background checks. Lead prices vary by trade and market and show in your account.

Key takeaways

  • HVAC is an urgent category in Local Services Ads: Google adds service-professional background checks on top of business, license and insurance checks.
  • There's no public price list. Google prices each lead by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. One 2026 third-party estimate puts HVAC at $35–$95 a lead.
  • Missed calls during business hours can still be charged if the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds, and Google says missed calls may hurt responsiveness.
  • Manual disputes were replaced by automated credits in 2024. Rate bad leads in the inbox; credits usually post within 30 days.
  • Judge LSA on cost per booked job, not cost per lead, and set the budget by season.

How do Local Services Ads work for an HVAC company?

Local Services Ads put your company name, star rating and Google Verified badge above the regular ads when someone searches for HVAC work in your service area. A homeowner taps to call, message or request a booking, and you're charged only for leads Google counts as valid. The general rules are on our Local Services Ads explainer. This page covers what's different for heating and cooling.

You choose the HVAC job types you want leads for. Pick only the work you actually take, because Google no longer credits leads for job types or areas you don't serve.

What does Google check before an HVAC company can run ads?

Google treats HVAC as an urgent category, because people call heating and cooling companies when something has broken, and it puts HVAC pros through an extra level of screening that includes service-professional background checks. Expect the whole process to take 3–4 weeks on average after you upload your documents.

What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?

It's gone. On October 20, 2025, Google replaced its Local Services badges (Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google) with a single Google Verified badge, and discontinued the money-back program that came with the Google Guarantee. Homeowners could only claim reimbursement for jobs booked through the ads before December 7, 2025. HVAC companies that had already passed screening got the new badge automatically. Remove "Google Guaranteed" from your trucks, website and ads if it's still there.

How much do HVAC leads cost on Local Services Ads?

HVAC leads cost whatever Google prices them at in your market, and that varies widely. Google doesn't publish a price list: it sets each lead's price by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode, and message leads are usually cheaper than phone calls. A 2026 estimate from Plyrium, a contractor software company, puts HVAC at $35–$95 per lead in US metros. It doesn't publish its method, so treat it as a rough range and use the charges in your own account as the real number.

Third-party LSA cost-per-lead estimates (US metros, 2026)
TradeEstimated cost per lead
HVAC$35–$95
Plumbing$30–$85
Electrical$40–$110
Roofing$90–$285

What are you charged for, and can you dispute a bad lead?

You're charged for valid leads: answered calls, missed calls during business hours where the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds, messages, voicemails and booking requests. A few details matter for HVAC shops that get a lot of calls in a heat wave:

  • Business hours come from your Google Business Profile. If your ad schedule is narrower, unanswered calls are charged only when both your schedule and your hours are active.
  • Phone menus delay the clock. If you use an automated menu, the 20-second timer starts after the caller's first key press.
  • Repeat callers aren't charged twice. Contacts from the same number or email within 15 days of activity count as the same lead. After 15 quiet days, a new contact is a new lead.
  • Callbacks count once. If you miss a short call and the customer calls back, you're charged once, on the first qualifying call.

Manual disputes are effectively gone. In mid-2024 Google replaced them with automated lead credits: it reassesses charged leads and credits low-quality ones on its own, usually within 30 days. You can still open a lead and choose Rate this lead to send feedback, which can earn a bonus credit. Leads marked "job type not serviced" or "geo not serviced" are no longer credited, so keep your job types and service area tight.

How do you set up Local Services Ads for an HVAC business?

  1. 1

Get your Google Business Profile right first.

Your business hours there decide when missed calls can be charged, and your reviews feed your LSA ranking. See Google Business Profile.

  2. 2

    Create the LSA profile.

Pick HVAC as the category, then tick only the job types and ZIP codes you serve. Leave duct cleaning or thermostats off if you don't want them.

  3. 3

    Start screening the same day.

Upload your state license, insurance certificate and owner details, and get technicians through the background checks. Google says 3–4 weeks is average.

  4. 4

    Choose a bidding mode.

Maximize leads lets Google set bids for your budget; Target cost per lead and Max per lead put a ceiling on price. Google recommends a budget of about 10 leads a week for Maximize leads and says results take about 2 weeks to settle.

  5. 5

Set the weekly budget and hours.

Your monthly cap is the weekly budget times the average weeks in a month. Only advertise hours when someone can answer.

  6. 6

Track every lead to a job.

Tag each LSA lead in your CRM as booked, not booked or junk, and record revenue. That's how you'll know if it's working at day 90.

What decides where your HVAC ad ranks?

Google ranks Local Services Ads on your bid and your profile quality, and on how likely you are to get the lead: what the customer searched for, how relevant your business is, and how responsive you are to inquiries. Profile quality includes your rating, number of reviews and average response time. Google doesn't publish how much each factor weighs.

Ranking factors Google names, and the HVAC move for each
FactorWhat to do in an HVAC shop
ResponsivenessAnswer live during every hour you advertise. Google says missed calls may hurt responsiveness
Average response timeReply to messages and booking requests in minutes, even from the truck
Rating and number of reviewsAsk every customer after every tune-up and repair, not only the happy ones. See how to ask for Google reviews
RelevanceList the job types you're good at; a tight list beats checking every box
BidRaise it for repair job types in peak weeks; you may pay less than your max

Why does every LSA call need to be answered fast?

Because a missed LSA call can cost you three times: the lead fee, the job, and your ranking. If a homeowner with no AC waits 20 seconds and you don't pick up during business hours, Google can charge the lead anyway, they call the next company on the list, and Google notes the miss against your responsiveness.

Some agencies claim Google scores responsiveness around the clock and drops shops that miss night calls. Google doesn't say that, so don't plan around it. What Google does say is enough: answer during the hours you advertise, and don't advertise hours you can't cover. If you want the 24/7 emergency leads, you need after-hours call handling that actually answers.

How should an HVAC company budget LSA through the year?

Set the budget by season, because you set an average weekly budget and Google caps the month at that figure times the average weeks in a month. A $500 weekly budget allows about $2,167 a month. When you hit the monthly cap, your ads stop showing until the next month, which is the worst thing that can happen in the first heat wave.

A seasonal LSA plan for HVAC (typical pattern, adjust to your climate)
SeasonWhat homeowners search forBudget moveJob types to push
Spring (Mar–May)AC check-ups before summerModerate; build reviews before peakAC maintenance, Install AC
Summer (Jun–Aug)No-cool emergenciesHighest; check the monthly cap weeklyRepair AC
Fall (Sep–Nov)Furnace and heat pump check-upsModerateHVAC maintenance, Repair HVAC
Winter (Dec–Feb)No-heat emergenciesHigh in cold snaps, low in mild weeksRepair HVAC
ENERGY STAR recommends checking the cooling system in spring and the heating system in fall, which is why tune-up demand clusters there. Peak timing depends on your climate.

How do you know if LSA is paying off?

Give it 90 days, then decide with booked jobs and revenue, not lead counts. Tag every LSA lead in your CRM so you can do lead source tracking and compare it with your other channels.

  1. Cost per booked job is below what a job earns you in gross profit.
  2. Booking rate on LSA leads is steady or rising. If it's falling, listen to the calls before you blame the leads.
  3. Answer rate during advertised hours is close to 100%.
  4. Credits are showing up for junk leads, and you rate the bad ones.
  5. Lifetime value counts: a repair that becomes a maintenance plan is worth more than one ticket. See customer lifetime value.

Common LSA mistakes HVAC companies make

  • Advertising 24/7 without answering 24/7. Missed business-hours calls can be charged, and misses may hurt responsiveness.
  • Leaving every job type on. Thermostat and duct-cleaning leads can eat the budget, and off-target leads aren't credited anymore.
  • Running out of budget in July. Raise the weekly budget before the heat wave, not after the ads stop.
  • Still saying "Google Guaranteed." That badge and its money-back program are gone.
  • Letting insurance or a license lapse. Verification can lapse with them, and so can your ads.
  • Judging by cost per lead. A $90 lead that books a $9,000 replacement beats ten $40 leads that don't book.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Google Local Services Ads cost for HVAC?

Google doesn't publish prices; each lead is priced by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode, and you set a weekly budget. A 2026 third-party estimate from Plyrium puts HVAC leads at roughly $35–$95 in US metros. Your real cost is in the Billing view of your Local Services Ads inbox.

Is Google Local Services Ads worth it for HVAC companies?

It is if your cost per booked job is lower than the gross profit a job brings in. Divide your average lead cost by the share of LSA leads you book. Shops that answer every call and follow up quotes usually see far better numbers than shops that miss calls.

Do HVAC technicians need background checks for Local Services Ads?

Google says HVAC is an urgent category and HVAC professionals go through an additional level of screening that includes service-professional background checks, on top of business and owner checks. Screening takes 3–4 weeks on average after you submit documents.

Can I still get the Google Guaranteed badge for my HVAC business?

No. In October 2025 Google replaced Google Guaranteed and its other Local Services badges with one Google Verified badge and ended the money-back program. HVAC companies that pass screening and verification now earn the Google Verified badge.

How do I dispute a bad LSA lead?

Google replaced manual disputes with automated lead credits in 2024. It reassesses charged leads and credits low-quality ones, usually within 30 days. You can open a lead and choose Rate this lead to give feedback, which may earn a bonus credit. Leads for job types or areas you don't serve aren't credited.

Do I pay for missed calls on Local Services Ads?

You can. Google charges for missed calls during business hours when the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds, and with a phone menu the clock starts after the first key press. Unanswered calls outside your ad schedule or business hours aren't charged.

Should HVAC companies run LSA in winter?

In heating climates, yes: no-heat calls are urgent, high-value leads. Keep a smaller base budget in mild weeks and raise it before cold snaps, watching the monthly cap, which is your weekly budget times the average number of weeks in a month.
