Google Local Services Ads for Plumbers: Cost, Screening and Job Types

By BRIX Editorial Team · Updated

Google Local Services Ads for plumbers are pay-per-lead listings above the regular search results for searches like "emergency plumber" or "water heater repair." You pay for each valid call, message or booking request. Plumbing is an urgent category, so Google adds background checks on the technicians who go into homes. Prices vary by city and job type.

Key takeaways

  • Plumbing is one of Google's urgent Local Services categories, alongside HVAC, electrician, garage door and locksmith, so screening goes deeper.
  • One 2026 third-party estimate puts plumbing leads at $30–$85 each in US metros. Google publishes no price list.
  • Job types decide which searches you show for. Google's own example: a plumber should select "install shower" to reach people looking for that service.
  • Turning off broad search stops ads on general queries like "plumber near me" but keeps specific-service leads.
  • Your real cost is per booked job. A slow phone turns a cheap lead into an expensive one.

What are Local Services Ads for a plumbing company?

They're Google's pay-per-lead ad format for local trades. Your listing shows your business name, rating, review count and the Google Verified badge at the top of the page, and a homeowner can call, message or request a booking from it. You aren't charged for clicks or views, only for leads that count as valid. For the basics across all trades, see our Local Services Ads explainer. Below is what matters when the leads are leaks, clogs and cold showers.

How does Google screen plumbers?

Google screens plumbers more closely than most trades because it labels plumbing an urgent category: people call a plumber when water is already on the floor and let a stranger in fast. On top of the business and owner checks, plumbers go through an additional level of screening that includes background checks on service professionals. Google says the process averages 3–4 weeks once your documents are in.

CheckWhat Google listsHave this ready
BackgroundBusiness check and owner check (select users), plus service-professional checks because plumbing is urgentNames and details of every tech who'll take LSA jobs
RegistrationBusiness check and business representative check (select users)Legal name matching your Google Business Profile exactly
LicenseState-level business and owner license where local law requires oneYour master or contractor plumbing license number
InsuranceGeneral liability (select users)A current certificate in the business's exact legal name

Plan for the techs, not just the owner. If you add a new plumber in March, get them through screening before the spring storm season, not during it. And keep the license current: plumbing licenses renew on state schedules, and a lapse can pull your verification with it.

Which plumbing job types should you turn on?

Turn on the job types you want to be called for and can staff, and leave the rest off. Google matches ads to the specific service people search for, and its help center uses plumbing as the example: a plumber should select "install shower" to reach customers looking for that service. You manage this under Profile & Budget, then Job types, and must keep at least one on.

How to think about common plumbing job types
Kind of workTypical callerKeep it on if…
Leak and pipe repairWater is running nowYou can be there the same day
Drain and clog clearingKitchen or main line backed upYou carry a cable machine on every truck
Water heater repair or installNo hot water; often a replacementYou stock or can source units fast
Toilet and fixture repair or installRunning toilet, new faucet, shower installSmall jobs fit between bigger ones
Sewer line and main lineBackups, roots, inspection requestsYou own a camera and can quote excavation
Sump pumpBasement flooding risk after rainYou serve areas with basements
Job type names differ in each account and change over time. Check the list Google shows you; it isn't published on the help pages.

There's a second switch worth knowing: broad search. Google says turning it off stops your ads from showing on general searches like "plumber near me" while keeping leads for specific services such as sink installation or shower repair. If general searches bring you price shoppers, try it off for a month and compare booked jobs.

How much do plumbing leads cost on LSA?

Plumbing leads cost what Google prices them at in your area, and there's no public rate card. Google sets each lead's price from your location, job type, the kind of lead and your bidding mode. A 2026 estimate from Plyrium, a contractor software company, puts plumbing at $30–$85 per lead in US metros, a little under HVAC and well under roofing. It says lead-quality-adjusted cost runs 2–3 times higher than the billed figure and doesn't publish its method, so check your own Billing view.

When are you charged, and what gets credited?

Google charges for leads it considers valid: answered calls, messages, voicemails, booking requests, and unanswered calls during your business hours where the caller waited more than 20 seconds. That last one matters most to plumbers, whose techs are under sinks with wet hands when the phone rings.

  • The hours on your Google Business Profile set the clock. Unanswered calls outside both your ad schedule and your listed hours aren't charged.
  • A phone tree delays the 20 seconds. The timer starts after the caller's first key press.
  • The same caller within 15 days is one lead. After 15 quiet days, a new contact from them is billed again.
  • Credits are automatic now. Google moved from manual disputes to automated credits in 2024 and usually posts them within 30 days. Use "Rate this lead" on bad ones.
  • Off-target leads aren't credited. Leads marked job type not serviced or area not serviced no longer earn credits, so keep both lists tight.

What helps a plumber rank higher in LSA?

Google ranks Local Services Ads on your bid, your profile quality and how likely you are to win the lead: the customer's search, how relevant your business is, and how responsive you are. Profile quality includes your rating, review count and average response time. Google doesn't publish weights.

  1. 1

    Answer live during advertised hours.

Google says missed calls may hurt responsiveness. A missed call on a burst pipe also goes straight to the next listing.

  2. 2

    Reply to message leads fast.

Message leads are often cheaper than calls, and response time is part of profile quality.

  3. 3

Ask every customer for a review.

Rating and review count feed LSA rank. See how to ask for Google reviews. Don't offer discounts for them; Google's policy bans it.

  4. 4

Match job types to what you're good at.

Relevance is a ranking input. A tight list beats ticking every box.

  5. 5

Raise the bid only after the basics.

A higher bid can't fix an unanswered phone.

How should a plumber budget LSA through the year?

Set a weekly budget that rises before your busy weeks. Google caps the month at your average weekly budget times the average weeks in a month, so $400 a week allows about $1,733. Once you hit the cap, ads stop until the month resets, which is a bad time to vanish if a hard freeze lands on the 25th.

When plumbing LSA budgets usually need to move
TriggerWhy calls jumpBudget move
Hard freeze in the forecastBurst and frozen pipes, no hot waterRaise the weekly budget before the cold arrives
Heavy rainSump failures, sewer backups in combined systemsTurn on sump and sewer job types if you do them
Holiday weeksDisposals and drains, houses full of guestsKeep budget steady; make sure someone answers
SpringLeak checks, fixture installsModerate; push reviews before summer
FEMA notes that heavy rain can overwhelm combined sewer systems and back water into basements. Timing depends on your climate.

A 90-day check: is LSA working for your shop?

  1. Cost per booked job is lower than the gross profit on an average LSA job.
  2. Your booking rate on LSA leads holds steady. If it drops, listen to the recorded calls before blaming the leads.
  3. Answer rate during advertised hours is near 100%.
  4. Credits show up for junk leads and you rate the bad ones.
  5. You can name which job types book best, and you've turned off the ones that don't.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Local Services Ads cost for plumbers?

Google doesn't publish prices. It prices each lead by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode, and you set a weekly budget. A 2026 third-party estimate from Plyrium puts plumbing at about $30–$85 per lead in US metros; your Billing view shows what you actually pay.

Why does Google run background checks on my plumbers?

Google classifies plumbing as an urgent category because customers let techs into their homes quickly during emergencies. That adds service-professional background checks on top of business, owner, license and insurance checks where required.

Can I stop LSA from sending me general "plumber near me" leads?

Yes. Google says turning off broad search stops ads on general searches like "plumber near me" while still showing for specific services you've selected, such as sink installation or shower repair. Test it for a month and compare booked jobs.

Do I pay for calls I miss on Local Services Ads?

You can. Google charges for unanswered calls during your business hours when the caller stays on more than 20 seconds; with a phone menu the clock starts after the first key press. Calls outside your schedule and listed hours aren't charged.

How do I get credit for a bad plumbing lead?

Google replaced manual disputes with automated credits in 2024 and usually posts them within 30 days. Open the lead and choose Rate this lead to give feedback. Leads for job types or areas you don't serve are no longer credited.

Is LSA worth it for a one-truck plumbing business?

It can be if you answer live and limit job types to work you can do the same day. Start with a small weekly budget, track every lead to a booked job, and decide at 90 days based on cost per booked job, not cost per lead.
